Hi all, new to the forums. i have been browsing ocuk for the last week or two thinking about building a new system. i built the system i am using now about 3 years ago so i need another that will last me as long. I have put a shopping list together of parts that i am thinking of purchasing but like everything technology has gone quicker than me and i find myself not really knowing what is best.

i purchased the BenQ G2400W 24" Widescreen HDMI/HDCP LCD HD Monitor last week as a start to the project. i just need some advice now regarding the rest of the list.

p.s i dont really want to go over a grand with the remainder of the parts.

thanks in advance :o

Don't go for this board as its now been replaced by the Asus M3A79-T Deluxe which has the new SB750.

GPU: Asus Geforce 9800 GT Hybrid Power 512mb GDDR3 (2 off)

SLI On a crossfire board, thats not going to work :( Look at a single HD4870 with the option to add another later if required :)

Above looks ok to me.

AMD Are about to replace this with the Phenom II 940 as there high end chip in about a month, Its well worth the wait if you can :)

CPU FAN: Artic Cooling Freezer XTREME

Don't have any Experience with this cooler but I expect its good if the previous versions are anything to go by.

any hard drives you could suggest would be helpful

I like the Samsung F1s myself :)

A touch over a grand :)

No point wasting your time on old tech if you want it to last a while.

Also as already pointed out ditch the 2 9800gt's, just get a decent one to start with.

Much faster than the spec *2* above. Can downgrade the board if you're not interested in overclocking the CPU.
Check the graphics card fits in the case. I expect it will.
More beef in the graphics department than the spec above. i7 is horribly expensive. You're future proof with this spec as well, since you can drop in a bigger phenom later if you want.

thanks for the reply's guys, quite a lot to ponder on.

so is it better to put one decent gpu in rather than two? i thought i read somewhere that you can get better scores with two cards running?

also i am thinking of purchasing vista, is this a wise option?

From your current spec you want to look at your psu, i have a the same power supply and its now started to die had it just over a year. Plus if you want your system to last 3 years you really need a better card.

I have 260 gtx in sli, games that are well sli supported you get almost double the fps, but the ones that arent you really need a good single gpu. If you get a good single gpu you can always add sli or crossfire at a latter date, if you feel you need to. As others have said its better to get 1 good gpu then 2 average ones.

You will be limted by your 512 mb ram on the 9800 wont be enough at higher res, and i dont think you would gain much going sli with them 2 cards.

thanks for the advice. i am def thinking about the one card now and some of these specs look awesome.

is it better to get a duo processor at 3.0 or a quad at 2.66?

Depends what resolution you're playing at.

Generally speaking the quad would be faster. For old games where the game will only use one core the dual would be better. However they're not likely to benefit from any more speed as you'll be in very high double or triple digit frame rates.

More and more games now can use multi cores, so the quad wins any time that happens, by a long way.
