Open University - (IT, TU100), need some advice

Completed TU100 last year and you don't really use Sense all that much tbh with you. Some TMAs require it but it isn't something you do every week. I found some of it really boring but TU100 as you have stated is the start and there are 4(?) routes for you to take afterwards so it covers a bit of everything and then allows you to go one way or the other.

I have no idea where they stand on stopping part way through but I get some financial support and due to having some already in the year I didn't get 100% in the module I am doing now, which is M250 Object orientated programming with Java. Got to say this course is more interesting than TU100 as this just one subject area and not so broad, which might not be the case for all level 1 courses.

Im doing the same thing you are, TU100 I think is an amalgamation of the old M150 and T175 modules which I did. M150 was a pretty fun intro to programming, T175 I found absolutely godawful, flakey, illogical, the type of BS i might expect when doing an English degree or something in the arts etc. Just no no no.

If you just want to program (as I did) then it gets better. M250 is all about that, M256 as well, although its more design focused and assumes you have done M250 already.

Nice to see some people doing the same course as I start in Feb (Environmental science). I might call upon you for help at some point :D

I'm considering doing a years worth (full-time) then credit transferring over to a proper uni for last 2 years + placement year. I think a placement year is fairly essential these days. I have relevant work exp, but more wouldn't hurt. Plus, a placement year gives me some contacts in industry.

Thought?

Sorry for hi-jack :p

So I called the OU and was able to cancel TU100 and the other 2 modules I'd chosen, they said I'm liable for £640 but it will be held with them until I decide on my next degree and will be used for that. The remainder of the student loans will be returned back to Student Finance. I have 25 months to reapply before I lose the £640 the OU is holding and I'll just have to reapply with Student Finance for the full cost of my new degree (when I decide to do it) minus the £640 they're holding for me.

Now I have plenty of time to do some short courses on various subjects to decide what I really want to do. I'm happy ;)

Nah I did the old courses that M250 replaced, M255 and M257, I gather M250 is basically those two combined. They were a lot of fun, playing around with Frog, HoverFrog etc :D

I'd forgotten about Frogs and HoverFrogs! :D

(Another former M255 and M257 student).

Aww dat smile! :D

I did a thread on OU a while back, and a few others have since surfaced. Might be an idea to get an 'OCUK official OU thread' to keep this under control. I suggest my original thread ;)

The OU in my experience have been incredible in supporting me in my part time study whilst working full time. Flexibility has been great.

When I first stated, I decided it was a good idea to try and do 2 modules at a time. This was a huge mistake. 4 weeks in, I contacted the OU and asked to suspend one of the modules, and do it in the next run. They gave me a full credit for the module, and let me decide when to do it - in the end, I did a different module, and I've never bothered doing that previous one.

OU is good, but as others have said, give them a call and explain your situation. I'd think about your reasoning clearly as 'It wasn't what I expected' probably doesn't count.

I'm currently doing M258, I'd be interested to know if anyone else is on this...
