Open University tutor ******* me off!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience I've done 4 years of courses with OU and been very satisfied. Not had any bad experiences with tutors though sometimes hear about them going AWOL.

They do have strict guidelines to follow so not always tutors fault. Lower level courses try to show how to answer properly for higher level courses - hence why they will penalise you for not showing working and word counts even though it seems pointless. But they just trying to get you to do it as standard.

For TMAs always do exactly what it says and take your answer from the materials to save hassles. For the higher level courses you get more open ended freedom and can start using external referenced material.

Using fewer words should not be penalised - are you sure you covered the points in enough detail? Rather than argue about the word count get details on what else you should have put in then you can take it further if not satisfactory answer.

I did some courses through the OU and found them very hit and miss and little in between.

As for the comments that there is no point ploughing through a worthwhile degree - I really agree. I automatically exclude people unless they have gone through certain institutions - do I miss out on good candidates, yep I am sure I do, but I also never get lumbered with a complete muppet.

You will get muppets from any institution. My employer has paid for my OU courses and other engineers I have spoken to look favourably on me doing this course. Getting off topic - no doubt there is much snobbery against the OU course and no doubt it does produce muppets like any other University. Far as I'm concerned it comes down to the person.

What course is it, BTW?

It's T175 Networked Living (Low level entry course)

Rape him in the Bum, That'll Learn him !!!

Yes I already thought about this.

It's only a pass/fail at the end of the course. And I scored 80 out of 100 Points.

Thetutor I had on my other course was great.
I'm just annoyed by this tutors' comments and clearly wrong/irrelevant statements file sharing & msn. It's putting me off continuing any other courses there.

If I complain to him he might get the hump...

Well after taking on people from the same University since 1995 I have yet to have a muppet from them - they just do not get through - although we have a heavy input into the course and it's demands. This is course specific though no doubt - in engineering the OU you indicate is seen as a good thing - in my line of work they do not provide the qualifications needed but people do peripheral stuff through them.

All I am saying is you can get a 1st from uni X and we will not consider you over someone with a 2:1 from our choice. So if someone wants the opportunities and experience we offer they come from the right uni or they go to another Uni and then get a very good CV and apply later. This comes as a shock to some people who think they can just apply with their new piece of paper. If they were that dedicated they would have found out the required route as that piece of paper is essentially worthless in their application.

Out of pure curiosity, in what industry are you involved?
