Gentlemen,

I'm interested in doing an OU degree. At the moment, I'm thinking of doing a degree in a Humanities subject (such as History) or one of the Social Sciences (such as 'International Studies'). Now, I just want some input from anyone whos been 'through the system' and to see what the set up is, how you study and what help there is on offer. One would expect that depending on the subject, dictates how much effort and time is needed to be put in to getting the pass grade etc. Depending what coursee you did, how much time did you spend a week on the course? Did you find it too intrusive or was it what you expected?

Finally, what are your thoughts and opinions are on the OU in general.

Many thanks in advance.

No offence, but I'm really looking for the opinion and views of people who've been through the OU. Thanks :)

I havent been through the OU all the way but I am currently studying with them for a BSC Hons in ICT & Computing.

I am on my 7th course now, seems like I have been studying forever.

I cannot praise the OU enough, the lecturers are very informative and friendly, the study material is very good. I have found that when I have a problem, I can ask my tutor for help or turn to the wealth of knowledge that is my fellow students.

How much time you study really depends on several factors such as, the level of the course, the subject, your existing knowledge of the subject.

If you have the time and money to be able to study whilst managing other commitments such as family and work life, then it is a very good idea to study.

If you have any specific questions that I can help with, please post them.

Thanks

I studied physics with them for just over a year at second year level.

I did about 120 credits over that period and it was very demanding on my free time (I'm in full time employment). The course materials are EXCELLENT, the residential weeks are also very good. If you are REALLY well motivated then you should give it ago.

If you have another degree already (like I did) then you can generally skip the first year if you have done something reasonably similar, I did economics, which covered much of the basic mathematics they like to teach you in first year at the OU.

Cheers

David
