Open University

Congrats on passing, 77% is a great result. Got 62% myself which im happy enough with. I certainly underestimated the difficulty of balancing full time work, a two year old and a new born with the studying ! what modules have you picked next ? I plan to do S141 and S142.

Thanks, you too! I've picked S141 and MST124 as MST124 is required for the Physics pathway. I had contemplated switching from a Natural Sciences degree to Mathematics and Physics however I think my grasp of pure mathematics would eventually let me down.

S142 looks really interesting, I wish I could pick that instead of S141 as S141 looks as if it may repeat a fair bit of S104 with regards to maths skills (apart from the stats).

Have you seen all of the changes being made to the science modules? It doesn't look as if there is going to be much choice in the future with 60 credit modules becoming the norm (although I can't comment on whether this will affect workload having only done one 60 credit module so far).

I'm starting TU100 in October. Looking forward to mucking about with this senseboard thingymajig.

I have just completed the access course with distinction, but to be honest, it was barely GCSE difficulty.

ive just finished TU100 and managed to get a distinction. some parts can be tricky although i think that was more down to the lack of time i could spend on each task due to a very hectic work life. I found myself just reading the material that directly linked to each of the TMAs.

The ICMAs are not particularly difficult and you get the added bonus of being able to redo them over and over until your happy with your highest mark.

If you have any questions about the course feel free to ask.

They do sometimes give you a higher grade. My wife recently got >85% on all her TMA's but 79% on the exam and was awarded Distinction.

I just got Grade 3 Pass on my exams with 70%, despite almost 100% on my TMAs which sucks.
But I decided at the start to pass with minimal effort. I've already worked in the industry for years and new management won't classify you as fully qualified without a degree which is insanely stupid. Guess 12 years an an engineer doesn't count...lol

What degree are you doing?

Finished my first 120 credits of my Business Studies degree.

(B122) 2013 Pass
(DB123) 2013 Pass
(B120) 2013 Pass
(LB160) 2013 Distinction

Will try harder for distinctions now as the modules will start counting towards final classification

I'm amazed at these people with insane results. I am obviously not cut out for it :D My best grade was a B at GSCE, but that was back in 1990. I more or less failed my A Levels. I got an E and an N!. But I really worked hard at this, and hopefully have done enough.

Where they recommend 15 hours per week study time, if you're like me, you will really need to double it ;)

I wouldn't worry too much about it! I left school 10 years ago with 10 C grade GCSEs and I had to retake Maths twice to achieve a C in it. Dropped out of A-Levels, then college, then dropped out after the first year of brick university as a mature student.

It takes some time to get into the swing of studying again. Although I haven't been reading the whole textbooks, just the parts applicable to each TMA. Will have to stop doing that now though as the rest of my modules now have Exams

I didn't do very well at school and have had to redo basic GCSE's in my adult life. I am now in my final year of OU and am aiming to achieve 120 credits this year (pretty intense!)

But my module grades so far this year have been 58 (bah!) 80, 80, 100.

I seem to be enjoying this more than i did school and realise this can only benefit me therefore i give it my 100%

Can anyone say for certain what the price of My Digital Life TU100 is?
I'm interested in doing this module as well as a few others but the pricing on the OU site is a little vague to be honest.

The fees are different if you live in Scotland - from the Open Uni fees and funding page:

•Modules cost £440–£815 (30 credits) or £775–£1015 (60 study credits).*

*2014/15 prices; fees vary depending on your choice of module and normally increase annually in line with inflation.

I've always wanted to do an evening course on tiling, so that I can re-do my bathroom. Do they offer these sort of courses or are they mainly web based for maths, English etc.

Phew! Found the individual price hidden away on the OU website, it's £850 for the TU100 module. Nearly fell out of my office chair when i read robfosters price of £2362.00

Just got my latest OU module results back.
I was pleased to see 73% in my EMA, however due to me only getting 67% in the OCAS that means a grade 3 pass and not the grade 2 that I wanted.
I've looked into appealing and you cannot "appeal because you were so close" - which is fair enough, a line has to be drawn somewhere.
So now with regards modules that count towards my degree classification I've got 2x Level 2, grade 2 passes & 1x Level 3, grade 3 pass. That means I need a grade 2 pass on my final module to secure a 2:1, else a grade 3 (and most likely grade 4) pass would only secure me a 2:2

A little gutted as the final module I've got to do has been described by all who do it as a nightmare, really difficult, takes up so much time with all the readong that needs to be done, difficult final exam - and I've got to average 70% on it!

Oh well, onwards and upwards.

Bump!

So who is starting study in October with the OU?

I completed U116 back in June, but since then I have been struggling to decide what to study next, Im on a Open degree route but was hoping to stick to the same subjects.

The only other module that looks interesting at level 1 is S104 but I dont think I'm ready for it as I have heard its fairly intense compared to other level 1 modules.

I was hoping to try a 30 credit in environmental areas but the selection seems really poor.

I do hope they add more modules at level 1 in the near future, for now I'm going to prepare myself better to hopefully start S104 in January instead.
