I have a couple games from Steam that simply wont play on my system.

The games require OpenGL and no matter waht I do I cant get them to play.

The games are :

Quake III Arena (enjoy old school and mate has a server running)
SOF II (love the on-line version)

My System

  • Motherboard - P7P55D-E
  • CPU - i5 720 @ 3.79
  • Memory - 8GB DDR 3
  • Gfx - ATI HD 5750
  • OS - Win 7 x64 SP1 on OZC Vertex II 60GB
Steam runs from a 2nd drive (2TB Western digital)

Any idea as to how to get these to play.

What error do you get? If it's LoadLibrary failed there is a thread on it here:

The workaround is to locate atioglxx.dll and copy it c:\windows\syswow64 if it's not already in there. Then open a command prompt and goto that folder. Type the following:
rename atioglxx.dll .dll

I've not noticed any side effects when using this method, but since some other apps may also look for an empty .dll by default (of even Windows may, who knows) YMMV.

A re-install of Windows with fresh drivers solved the problem btw.

With SOFII the game just crashes with an error regarding the file SOFII

With Quake III Arena the game loads fine unti9l the menu and then its all mucked up but I can lauch Team Arena from it but nothing else.

What drivers are you running? From I think it was about 10.4-10.9 or so I was having problem with OGL games playing properly. The later 10. versions and the 11. versions have fixed it, so that may be a cause. Try updating anyway :p

Got the latest ones installed.

Ah, that sounds like the Catalyst AI issue. It needs to be disabled for those games to work properly. Apparently it's not listed as an option with some newer cards. If you don't have it listed, try renaming the game exe. In some cases that does the trick.

How do I disable that CatalystAI
