Just brought some work I've been working on at home into university for hand-in. I completely didn't anticipate the problems I'm having opening a 2007 document in Word 2003. I probably should have but anyway...

Is there anything that can open a 2007 document even in basic text form. Wordpad and Notepad don't and I can't download and install the upgrade MS released for older versions of Office on the uni systems.

by Default Word Beta 2007 documents have a file extension of .docx instead of .doc

When you save these you should have chosen the Word 2003 format. HOWEVER, a simple rename and drop the 'x' off the end of the extension should sort it

Is changing the extension a matter of just adding .doc to the end of the filename? If it is, it's not working.

No, the file that you can see should say 'myfile.docx' (where 'myfile' is the name of the document)

Click it once, then either right click or hit F2 and then delete the 'x' off the end and hit enter.

It will then read 'myfile.doc' and the icon will change to read 2003. Then you can open it normally.

This may be pointing out the obvibous, but check whether your folder options in control panel have the "Hide extensions for known file types" unchecked.

But if the extension is docx, the uni comps might not recognize the file format and show it anyway.
