Hey Gents,

I've wanted to buy some dumbells for a while now but have never gone through with it for reasons unknown! So I want to buy some now, the bad news is I have just had an offer accepted on my first house so before my girlfriend can nick anymore money off me, I need to buy these quick!

I'm on a tight budget so obviously these aren't going to impress anyone but will these suffice for a 6'3, 22 year old that has been been doing 50 press-ups religiously every night for the past 6 months (just an insight to how much my arms might have grown muscle wise)? Are they adequate weights?

Thanks :)

Go for it. Some other guys may post a few links to other places that sell weights but Argos is good and cheap. Possibly have a look in the local paper, you may even be able to get a bench too at that price second hand. :)

Do you have a bench to use the barbell?

Personally I prefer metal weights (not totally sure why) but the cheapest they have there start at £60 for a set like that. Have a look in your local ads paper/online at Gumtree/Craigslist or similar as many people buy weights and never actually get round to doing anything much with them.

You might find you are better to join a gym for the wider variety of kit on offer plus sometimes there are some good deals available. One of my local uni gyms has membership for ~£25 a term (about 3 months) as a non-student and it offers a greater choice of equipment overall than simply using dumbbells/barbells. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I have a bench yeah, I try and do a lot of exercises at home and eventually I want to kit my spare room out to be a home gym. I play too much football/badminton to make use of a gym to be honest.

Can I confirm a 50kg will be plenty?

This is the bench I have.

50kg should do as a starting point anyway, without knowing you and what you can lift I can't say that it will be enough for definite though as some people are naturally stronger than others. :)

50kg will be nowhere near enough tbh for squats/deadlifts/benching

if i was you i would wait/save up and buy a proper set when you can

Has anyone got a picture of their bench in a bedroom in their house?? My GF is worried how much room it'll take up

Could anyone help please :)

I'd get the metal ones personally

You have more room for expansion if/when you grow out of the original weights set (which can be surprisingly quick).

However, the ones you're looking at are half price at the moment (£20) which is a bit of a steal

This is the best deal for just a barbell & weights I've seen (2nd hand aside)

As for size, a bench takes up a fair bit of space because you have to get round the sides of it to change the weights, I'd say roughly a 6' x 6' square minimum to have it comfortably in your room.
