Opinions on acoustic bass?

Ive been playing electric bass for around 2 years, and i was wondering about acoustic basses.

I haven't played or even seen one in the flesh.. most music shops i try don't seem to have any in stock (tbh i haven't looked that hard!)

I would love one as i dont always like playing with amp/headphones.

And also is it a crime to play slap bass acoustically? There is just something about it that doesn't seem right!!

What are peoples opinions on acoustic basses, worth getting?

Last week I engineered a rockabilly band that used an acoustic bass. They have a kind of hollow sound when plugged in, which suits music which might use a double bass, or doesn't want the immediate punch of an electric bass.

That's also why slap might not sound too great on them, still might be interesting to try though. There are no rules really, if it sounds good and all that . . .
