I currently drive a 64 plate M135i with 62000 miles on it. I have had it for about 8 years now and am contemplating a change as I just have that itch to change. I am interested in a TT, and with my car and my spare cash I would have about £18k to spend (mine is showing about £9-10k trade in value).

So my questions are what sort of TT should I be looking at for this money and would anyone else consider this change when the car is likely to be only maybe 4 years newer and will be less powerful.

No.

This is at best a sideways move and once the fun of buying a new car goes away you'll be wondering why you bothered.

Wait until you can upgrade to something better.

I thought the first response would say that, and makes complete sense to me. I think its mainly previously I hadn't ever owned a car for more than 3 years, but had also never paid more than about £5k total out before I got the M135i.

It is probably best to stick with it, it does still put a smile on my face, I suppose its just the familiarity and the little nicks here and there from age that make me think about swapping.

What I think I might do instead is find a body shop and get the little knocks and scratches sorted and then an alloy refurb and a full valet to make it seem fresher and newer again.

Looking at Autotrader looks like private sale your looking 11-13k. So selling private would put you up to £20-22k budget for a change of car

2017 Audi S5 money > More Space than the TT and not as costly as an RS5 to maintain
2014 TTRS money > Less space than current car
2014 Audi RS5 Money > 4.2l V8 but running costs would be significantly higher

Go take a few cars for a test drive. Nothing wrong with a sideways step if you fancy a change.

Honestly look at private sale instead of dealer trade in. Used cars are at good prices these days due to new being so unaffordable for most people.

This doesn't seem like a reason to change your 300bhp rear wheel drive 6 cylinder hatchback for a 2 litre front wheel drive Audi.
Unless you really want to (which presumably the OP does). OP can always sell it on if the TT doesn't work out. It's not like the 1 series is a special car.

Could try to get a TTRS. Or the model below TTS?

I'd argue that in this particular case it is.

He's in the unique situation of owning one he's had since it was almost new. A typical 2014 M135i will have multiple owners many with different attitudes to looking after it, as would a 2016 or so Audi TT.

I don't disagree with the idea of wanting a change - just that the budget he has is not, in my view, sufficient to make this change worthwhile. He's just going to end up buying an older car from a similar generation to the one he has now.

Is it even worth swapping from an m135i to a TTs?
They both have similar power. The BMW is rwd, the Audi is 4wd.
The TTS is basically a golf r/Audi S3 with a liposuction.
Sidegrade at best.

Would be worth an upgrade if it was the TTRS, but finances dictate, alongside with cost of running that car.

I would personally, test drive a TTRS, even if out of budget now.

It will give you clarity on the want to change, you will either want to and save up.
Or get the niggles etc sorted on your car, which is what I expect may happen.
Maybe get it a proper valet as well.

The M135i seems a relative bargain of a car when you consider how much money you're having to add to move to stuff that's not all that much newer or better.

Totally get wanting a change though when you've been driving something for 8 years.

Would it though?

A quick look suggests that it would be the second generation car, which dates originally from 2006 so is going to feel like a backwards step inside. It's also not really much more powerful than his M135i either, at 340bhp instead of 306bhp.

Older doesn't necessarily mean worse.

34bhp is a noticeable difference.
