I am looking at buying my first car and the S40 seems like a good option, the build quality seems pretty good and is seems like a comfortable car that I would happy to keep for 3-4 years. I live in the UAE so petrol price is not really a huge consideration but safety is and S40 seems pretty safe. I am just wondering if these things are very reliable as I don't want expensive maintenance bills ( who does?) The ones I am looking at have around 50,000 miles and are going for around 6-8,000.

Many thanks!

Is it me or have more than 50% of the 'Spec me a car' threads recently come from people in the UAE

We don't know your car market, we dont know your local conditions, we dont know your roads, we dont know your dealers, we dont know your availability of spare parts, etc etc.

Well I converted the km to miles! I only asked since I know very little about buying cars, it being my first purchase and wanted to know if these cars are reliable or not as they seem to be much cheaper than cars of the equivilent spec!

Maybe some of the UAE members will point me towards some UAE forums then:rolleyes:

lol has there been an exodus of people to the UAE?!

As far as I knew when I spoke to the Export Manager of Ford while I was in Dubai, European Ford vehicles suffer because of the stress on A/C, where they weren't designed for the extreme temperatures, and they rely heavily on very tinted windows.

Only now is that being rectified, but US Ford models fare a lot better, maybe worth looking towards those?

Solid cars, generally reliable.
Not at all exciting to drive but there's nothing wrong with them really.

We've had a V50 for four years now from new and nothing major has happened.
But then again nothing remotely exciting has happened either :p

This, I don't even know how durable a volvo is in a Desert?

At a guess, maybe buy a Toyota?
