Which is better?

Mainly for gaming, I could overclock but I only have GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value & i'm not sure how much I can push it (current setup has no PCI lock).

So, thats my budget, which would you go for? Also benchmarks could be handy :)

I plan to upgrade to a nice top of the line GTX/X1900 so yea... :)

Personally, I'd go for the Opty 165 as it's the Toledo core (2 x 1MB cache).

However, since it only has the 9x multiplier your board will have to be good for ~290MHz+ HTT to reach the chip's potential.

Don't worry about your RAM, just keep it on a divider to keep it close to 200MHz. FYI, in my 2nd rig I use the Geil value 2GB kit, and I run it at 210MHz @ 2.5-3-3-7 1T on an MSI board without any issues, which is faster than spec'd timings and speed, so pretty impressive considering it's a value kit.

I was thinking of the same board you have in your sig! Would that do it?

Hmmm, my X2 4400+ POSTs fine at 2.7GHz (270 x 10), but won't POST reliably at 2.8GHz. I don't know if that's because the board is hitting its limit @ ~280MHz, or if it's the CPU crapping out.

The DFIs are supposed to be the best at achieving very high HTT speeds.

The DFI won't bottleneck the overclock (unless it's a really old or cruddy one). You should reach upwards of 300 with one of those. My Asus premium (which generally does not go so high) can do 315 no problem and i've not even tried to push it further. I'd guess it's the CPU giving up (or the heat, power or ram)

Back on topic, I'd probably go for the 165 too. In fact I might well do exactly that in a few months when the urge to go dual core overcomes me. I am tempted to go up a catagory though and go for the 170 or 4400+ like Havana.

Go for the 170 if you are thinking about dual core.

If you are luck enough to get good stepping (OcUK seems to have very good stepping atm) then you wont look back and you will get FX-60+ speed easily...

Nice to know the Asus boards are good for high (300+) HTTs.

If you are not overclocking at all then it has to be the 4200+. The 165 is really an overclockers delight and there is a punishment of death by lethal injection if you do purchase one and not overclock it.

Choice wisely my friend. :)

I've odered a 165 myself with a dfi lanparty expert and G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200, I was hoping this will be a good base for some clocking anyone have any experiences with similar hardware?

I had a quick play and pushed the cpu alone to 280 fine but got a strange crash not sure what caused it but its late so will play some more tomorrow :)

Personally I would have got the Gskill HZ instead allowing you to run your ram 1:1 with your overclock.

I have a opty 170 currently running @ 2.6ghz on 1.3v :D running my Gskill HZ ram 1:1 at 260mhz
