Majorty is gaming and think I will need a dual core to take advantage of upcoming game improvements.

Whats the better chip to get?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM) 2.0ghz

or

AMD Opteron UP 146 San Diego 2.0GHz 1MB Cache (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-142-AM)

Im guessing the opty will clock better given I get a decent stepping but what use is the speed if single core? Anyone know how the x2 3800's clock?

PS it will be on a Asus A8N-SLi

There was some talk of an X2 3800+ OEM coming in for £190 inc vat...you may choose the wait if you have patience (although i probably couldn't!) :D

yep - you can already pick up the oem model for under £200...

obviously cant link though.

I had an X2 3800 and it was a really good cpu, however if you can afford get an opteron 165 - you wont regret it!

I was looking at getting an Opty, but the sparse amount on the net is annoying, they are everywhere in *** US shops and for around £200 :(

I'm going for a 3800 x2 this/next month, but the extra cache of the opty is nice. Still, it will be a nice change from my 2200XP....

With current reductions in price of the 3800 its silly not to get it, I cant see why others use single cores...

I bought a 165 last December when they were the same price as the X2 3800.

Now they are about £30 more expensive, but still good value. With minmal Vcore increase mine easily beats X2 4800 speeds, well worth it if you can afford it.
