Opteron 146 - what thermal compound

Ok, got my opty 146, and I'm sticking a new heatsink on it. I need to remove whats left of the current compound and add some new stuff. So what compound is well recommended, and how much are you meant to put on exactly?

I've seen pictures with merrely a blob in the middle, and I've seen picture of people covering the whole thing.

So how much should I use and what are the good brands?

Arctic Silver 5 Is very good stuff.


Use 1 Rice grain size smear and spread it out, there are instructions on their site

Yes, AS5 is the way to go. Small grain sized spread (dont use a knife )

How about removing any current thermal compound? Go pro and get the proper stuff, or use me tin of lighter fluid instead?

Piece of tissue paper does the job fine me lol

get some primula cheese... just spread a bit of that on.... it works a treat gives a nice cheese toastie smell in the room

I use medical wet wipes. Make sure they are nearly pure alcohol though, so that it doesn't leave any residue.

Is that for removing the old paste or as new thermal compound? If you're going to give advice at least make it clear!
