Opteron Vs 64 X2

i wonder why they change the names like that when they are the same core... ah well, 10 days till my opteron 170 arrives, i chose it over an X2 4400.

Venus and Denmark were to be S940 but got dropped when AMD decided to market their 1-way Opteron processors on S939 instead.

San Diego and Toledo were the functional equivalents at the time and are what were actually ended up getting used, the only real difference being in the memory controller.

Chemical vapour deposition and in particular molecular beam epitaxy are not able to impregnate a large substrate evenly accross the whole surface. I didnt think of this before but the lithography processes will also have a larger angle when processing the mask on the outer edges of the wafer.

"in the silicon melt" - The wafer is heated to very high temperatures (600C IIRC) during deposition but it never nears melting temperature...

The processes AMD and Intel use are on the bleeding edge of technology, massively more complex than anything i studied but a lot of the principles will still hold.

I obviously need to read up on this a lot more, It's a long time since I studied this and things move on (thought the term chemical vapour depostion rings a few bells ;) )

Opty v X2

Sorry guys I'm still confused here! I presently have a S939 Winchester 3500 which I'd like to upgrade. After years of loyalty to AMD I'm thinking I have to go to the dark side and go for a Conroe, but as this means new RAM, MB, Processor and all the hassle of re-building everything I'm trying to get some more mileage out of the S939 MB if I can.

If I can still find any at a sensible price, would I be better going for an AMD 64X2 or an Opty?

Any advice greatfully received as its a minefield now!

Thanks,

well first off, do you definatly want dual core ? as you can pick up an opteron 148 that will do 2.95Ghz for £55 or an opteron dual core 165 for about £100 which should give you around 2.6 Ghz per core. all depends on what you do with your pc :)

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but which would be better for performance/overclocking - the Opteron 165 or 170?

I am also trying to decide between the following:

AMD X2 4400+
AMD Opteron 165
AMD Opteron 170

(all 939)

depends on your board, if your board doesnt clock very high and has a low voltage capability like my current board, the X2 4400+ is better. If you have a good board then an opteron 170 would be better, could clock higher and i think has a better architecture than standard X", although i dont think it makes too much of a difference like for like.

from the reviews i managed to find the best people seem to be getting with these boards is 260fsb although these reviews are quite old and as such a newer bios may have alleviated most of the problem. if the reviews are still true then an X2 4400+ or opteron 175 if you can find one cheap enough would be your better option.

I had that Gibabyte board. I got it upto 300HTT once. 280HTT is stable, around 290 is flakey. The review mentioned speaks rubbish.

there it is folks, get your bios updated and get the opteron :)

to be honest weescott, i didnt think one of the reviews was good at all, the guy could only get 217 fsb! even a budget board does more than this lol.

To be honest locutus12, I probably had the same bios as the review board back then. I haven't found one HW review site where I can't pick a hole in thier testing.
