optical input help

£100 is a good price for video/audio switcher, remote controlled. If/when I consideri DVD-Audio I could do with one, my HT pre-amp lacks 5.1 but if I route my pre-amp to one of these, and the DVD player as well, then output into poweramps that'll sort out the problem.

Y splitter in reverse doesn't work, I got one and tried it. You just get nothing from both sources.

Thanks for that that's all we needed to know....Bang goes the cheap option.. ;)

Seems a little strange though, did You pull it apart to find out why ? would think its just an optical splice

In the end I just shelled out £15 for a coaxial cable and switched the DVD player to that freeing up the optical for the sky.

No I didn't take it apart, I can't understand why it doesn't work either. Something does get through as you can see the red light at the end, but for some reason the signal is obviousy disrupted.

a £2.99 rca cable would have done the job just as well;) glad you got it sorted though.

Now you tell me :) thought it might have been something to do with the length as I needed a 3 meter one.

There is impedance differences between proper coaxial cables and standard RCA cables

so by that are you saying I did right avoiding the cheap stuff ?

you did not have both sources on at the same time right?
and you did enable spdif(optical out
put)on the sound settings? :)

Yup. Coaxial cables are used for electrical digital audio and component cables. Shouldn't use standard RCA cables (red & white) for digital audio or component feeds.

still works :)
Yes but cheapo RCA cables are inferior to decent RCA. Even with a digital signal.

A digital signal is still a wave.

It's possible to get clicking and sound blips with poor cables.

lol i know:) i use a 10meter rca to transfer digital pc > amp just fine but it's only at long lengths such as 10m where it can start to become a problem. a few meters has never been a problem in my experience:)

Only one source at a time was switched on, and optical out was enabled. It just doesn't work.
