A mate of mine work yesterday told me in conversation that microsoft were developing a replacement for Vista called "optima", is this this right or has he got it wrong? Apparently it'll be out in about 12 months.

They dont replace OS's within 12 months. They've spent billions developing Vista and it will be the flagship OS for a good few years yet.

There won't be a replacement out for Vista for atleast 2 -3 years and I've never heard of the code name 'optima'. The only new OS I can think of is Server 2007 which is codename Cougar.

You friend is talking out of his bum, if he's not I'll eat my hat on live web feed.

Windows Vienna (formerly known as Blackcomb) is the codename of the desktop OS that will replace Vista in a few years time. I've never heard of Optima either. It sounds like the name of a poorly engineered South Korean car. ;)

he speaks the truth

Blackcomb is suppose to be a total replacement for Windows, its not going to have a taskbar or a start button apparently

He might be getting confused with Microsoft's R+D OS called "Singularity"? God knows where "Optima" came from though..

Would all these operating systems be cheaper if MS didn't pay millions to PR companies to come up with the names?

Come on guys.....I reakon the guy maybe speaking some sort of truth........

Do you reakon the mighty M$ is going to sleep on Vista, I dont think so, While 1 team was working on Vista maybe another was working on its big brother.......as you are all aware you cant sleep on things like this.

I reakon M$ have a few in the pipeline NOW......just waiting on 8 core pc's with 16GB ram............u can count on it...........

If they released a brand new OS every year i very much doubt they would be able to recoup their costs and make any decent profit.

Just as a side note......

M$ will make more cash form us customers by making operating systems every few years rather than a few months....

why pay for VISTA when OPTIMA will be released in 12 months........think about it....

But lets not kid ourselves.........vista is so yesterday for M$.....they are leap years ahead.......trust me....

Do you think Vista is the end all of M$...O/S?......
Do you think M$ is not working on a superior O/S now...
Do you think AMD/ATI/Nvidia/Intel are working on software/hardware years ahead?

Yes I am serious.........

one lesson I have learnt.....stay 1 step ahead......thats exactly what the above are doing....or trying to do...

Do you reakon a Processor/GPU/OS is born and us(consumers) have it within weeks/days/months.....

LOL.....they are way, way ahead of us............

no one's contesting the idea that MS have a new OS in the pipeline, they're just saying it's not Optima and it's not going to be here in 12months.

slightly O/T...minor rant - not aimed at you bodybag, just generally:

Why do people use a $ instead of S when referring to Microsoft? Is it because you need to spend money to buy operating systems and other pieces of software they developed?

And using the $, very cleverly and subtly puts it across that you disagree with their business model and profit making tactics and sit with the camp that always grumbles about how much money Mr Gates has and that all the software the company has developed is useless and is rubbish?

Or is there something more worthwhile that causes you to deliberately put a $ instead of an S?

</rant>

It's pointless having such as fast OS life cycle form MS, it's simply not in thier business interest.

Consumers are a relatively small part of MS' market comapred to it's biggest customer: Business.

Lets be honest, business havn't even started with Vista yet, their still waiting for both the bedding in process and Server 2007. Why waste all of that huge development cost on a product that hasn't even been adopted yet?

Yes MS have been working on Vista's replacement (before the release of Vista infact) but it most definetly won't be out in 12 months, hell, I doubt Vienna will be out in 2009 when MS plan to release it.
