Optimal RAM Settings

I would like to set my RAM to the fastest voltage/timing BUT i want 95%+ reliability. I have OCZ 1066 Reaper With Heat Sink, DDR2, 4X2GB RAM in dual channel interlaced mode. I set the timings in the bios to 5-5-5-18 and left the voltages as default. With an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo MB and a Intel Quad Core Q6600, 2.4GHZ CPU

According to speccy and CPUZ it says max bandwidth "PC2-6400 (400MHZ) is that right? And CPUZ in the voltages line says 1.80 on the first three then 2.100 on the last one

Are my setting optimal? If not what should i change what to? Perhaps an easier way is to use on-the-fly overclocking for the CPU/RAM when using certain program does the Asus software do this; what would people recommend? Thanks

Hey SoildSnake,

if you open CPU-z and look in the [Memory] tab and not the [SPD] tab you should see the information you seek . . . 5-5-5-18 @ 533MHz should be fine! :)

Download, and burn a Memtest CD-Rom and let that run for a few hours to make sure everything is "100%" stable!

It is stable since this is what i have been using for some time but i want to ensure that the settings are not UNDER clocked or set too low; i want to get max performance i can while staying safe; are these settings best; if not what should i change and to what?

In the memory tab it says the DRAM frequency is at 534Mhz is that the correct speed then?

Thanks for the help

Whats the voltage set in bios? When i ran the reaper pc8500 i needed 2.1v to keep things stable, most ddr2 defaults to 1.8v upon installation.

I think it is at 1.8. So do i need to have it at 2.1 in order to gain the best performance? It is 100% stable at the moment so should i risk it? Would there be a big performance increase?

I noticed in speccy that the "max bandwidth" says 6400 (400mhz) that is too low isn't it it should be 8500 for my RAM

Thanks again

In CPU-z the SPD tab tells you the voltage settings of the memory at it's SPD values, i.e. whatever the memory ships with, regardless of what you set in the BIOS, however, whatever you set in the BIOS will work. :)

The alternative is to use AI Tweaker to get your memory voltage and speed correct.

I have not changed them so default in the CPUZ it says in the voltages line 1.80 on the first three then 2.100 on the last one

you are reading the setting in the wrong section, to find out your correct setting you need to look at the memory tab, the spd tab is telling you what the setting would be for the memory if it is running at freq

OK it says the following; so does this mean i am getting max power/performance from my RAM (w/o overclocking) Thanks for the help

DDR2 / 8192 Mbytes / channels; Dual / DC Mode Symmetric

Dram Frequency 534.5mhz

FSB: DRAM 1;2

your running a smidge over rated speed for that ram, so if you are doing that at stock vram then its all good, most ddr2 needs a bump [vram] to reach rated speeds. 1.8 is ddr2 default voltage as someone said, but 2.1v is generally safe especially for ddr2 performance ram.

If your system is stable and your pc is doing what you want it to do then no need to change it imo.
