Optimist or Pessimist?

My mother is a pessimist - Expects the worst and is surprised by the good. Never disappointed.
My father is an optimist - Expects the good and is often bitterly disappointed.

I'm somewhere in between. I look for the good but am never surprised when i don't get it.

Being optimistic has always left me disappointed, being pessimistic gives me nice surprises every now and again and everyone loves nice surprises! I would say I'm a chronic pessimist with occasional spasms of acute optimism - which always seem leave me more pessimistic than ever.

I'm a short-term pessimist but long-term optimist.

I'm fairly sure that whatever I'm about to do/see/whatever will go badly for me, but I also have this totally irrational feeling that everything will be OK for people in the long run.

I am by nature relatively cautious and as such probably come across as a bit of a pessimist outwardly.
However, this shaky exterior belies an inner self-confidence and belief that I can have an influence on things and make them turn out OK. I just don't tend to shout it from the rooftops! Also by being a pessimist about somethings, it actually fixes the problem, because it means that I anticipate negative outcomes and plan a response to them.

One advantage of pessimism is, of course, than one is never disappointed.

yes but there are times my pessimism causes over thinking a situation, the amount of what if scenarios that go through my head with any action i could take on things is scary sometimes, most of them usually negative though

Oh for sure, I'm forever over-analyzing even fairly trivial situations. I've had so many 'imaginary conversations' with people you wouldn't believe!
