I am in the process of building a new workstation for NLE Timelapse video editing and am trying to decide how to connect my drives for the best performance. The Motherboard i have is an ASUS P9X79 PRO which has the following SATA connectivity:

X79 chipset controller raid 0, 1, 5 & 10
4x SATA 3Gb/s ports
2x SATA 6Gb/s ports

Marvell PCIe controller raid 0 & 1
2x SATA 6Gb/s ports.

I will have The following drives:
1x Crucial 256GB m4 slim SSD
1x LG BDRW optical drive
2x Seagate 1TB, 64MB Cache SATA 6Gb/s HDD's
4x Seagate 2TB, 64MB Cache SATA 6Gb/s HDD's

Can anyone help me decide the best configuration to install my drives?

use the ssd as your os boot drive on the intel sata3 speed port

put the 4 seagates on the intel sata2 ports

and the rest on the marvell pcie controller, could put your lg optical drive on the spare sata3 speed intel port

then its up to you whether you want to raid the hdd's or not, raid 0 does carry a risk of losing data should one drive fail, raid 5 is much safer
