HI my objective: to increase storage, and have redundancy without having to backup to external drives all the time, while enabling access from other devices without having the main PC on.
I am currently running out of space on my External HD storage, all drives in external USB drive bays. I have the following drives
• 1.5 TB TV Series (x2 with backup drive)
• 1 TB TV (x2 with backup drive)
• 2 TB movies (x2 with backup drive)
• 500 gb Music (x2 with backup drive)
I have USB backup drives for each of the above, I only now have 500gb (across all drives) of space left. I manually backup the data periodically, but to have access to the data , I have to have the PC on and one or more USB devices, I am increasingly getting frustrated by this setup, especially as now I have had to span data across drives as I am constantly running out of one drive, and moving things around. And I just don’t want my PC on with other devices when it isn’t necessary.
Requirements
More storage and connection to all home devices
• Panasonic 55VT50
• Onkyo 616,
• Western Digital WD HD Live Hub
• Western Digital Live (no HD)
• Ipad
• 2 x pcs
• Mobile Devices (iphone / Android)
• XBOX
Having the remote / FTP access is a bonus, which I know the Synology does, but the HP wont.
I have been considering the
1. Synology DS413J, with 4x 3tb drives (bought from 2 separate providers, so if a drive failure, it will reduce the chances of all drives going at once), in Raid 5.
I have concerns that the Raid isn’t going to cover my backup if a drive fails, even though the raid could be rebuilt.
2. HP Proliant N40L Server, while this looks like a better solution, it has no raid 5 and would need an operating System like FreeNAS or WHS2011 ( which I don’t want to use as it doesn’t support anything above 2tb drives and 4k format.)
3. ICYBOX 4bay USB device, hot swappable, but carry on with the manual backup, downside is that it would have to be connected to the PC or the western digital live hub to be accessed.
All in all I understand this isn’t going to be a cheap solution, mainly due to the 4x 3tb drives costing £400 ish. But what I didn’t consider was the cost of an enclosure, I didn’t realise that it would cost an additional £250+ for a nas enclosure..
Questions
1. If raid 5 is setup on 3 3xtb Drives, can I add an additional 4th 3 tb drive and add into the Raid Array without losing any of the data on the other 3 drives,
2. If the Nas enclosure fails. Will the Raid 5 setup (or any raid setup) be movable to anther nas without losing the data.
3. Other options?
Many thanks for your help
