Options when Super Unleaded is unavailable

Would a small percentage of methanol in with the fuel like Kosta runs on his STI do the same job as an octane booster? Meth is nice and cheap too

No, it does not.

I was replying to Rilots comment about a bag of spanners.

The S2000 can run on either fuel, check the fuel cap if you don't believe me. I guess I wouldn't know much about fuel or S2000s though as I am handicapped.

The ECU certainly doesn't need remapping. Honda did that for you when they added a knock sensor and ignition trims. Hence my comment about it being fine just you may notice a change in VTEC feel and top end power, this is based on my experience anyway. In the cold weather I doubt it matters much anyway

Have you ever tried it on 95 RON?

My s2000 also ran fine on 95. Never had any problem with it. VTECing it didnt feel any different, but then again, I actually am handicapped, so I guess my opinion is useless too :p

Yes, I ran mine on 95 for a few tanks to see what the difference was. It was noticeably worse. My MPG dropped by an amount that was greater than the cost difference between 95 and 97/98/99 and the car idled badly/had less kick at the top end. It just didn't feel as if it liked it very much.

Maybe it needs to be run for several tanks to change properly or something? I don't know. The fuel cap recommends 97 so that's what it gets.

So is anyone going to say why SUL is apparently going to drop off the face of the planet or what?

I didn't know why until Sin Chaser explained it. For ths context of this thread the UK mainland isn't an island and they are stopping shipping it to th stations on Jersey etc.

Hes deleted the OP that starts with this explaination though.

You could perhaps try reading the thread, even without knowing beforehand that Sin_Chase lives on a tiny little island, surely this statement made the situation clear enough?

I am not particularly impressed at the prospect of shelling out for ferry fees, aftermarket ECUs, a mapper and a day on the rollers purely because the local authorities refuse to repair SUL storage containers and instead discontinue it within the next 3 weeks.

Well the toys certainly vacated the pram rather quickly in this thread.

Always does with threads by the op. He often jettisons toys from pram if you disagree with him especially if its about why you would have a VTEC engined car on an island with a blanket 40 limit where using VTEC properly is not legal :p

Ah I see, haha we get SUL :p

As said its been deleted, or it may been reposted since but I'm lazy to read word for word so meh :D

OP

Jersey is making moves to withdraw the sale of Super Unleaded from the island. Instead of fixing a fuel storage tanker they are choosing to cease the importation and distribution of SUL.

An alternative option seems highly unlikely at this time.

The only fuel available will be 95 Unleaded. I understand this will also mean sales of SUL will be withdrawn from the other Channel Islands also.

So, talk to me about octane boosters and other potential options!

News story covering it: http://www.channel103.com/news/index...ryid=24706&s=9

My EP3 Civic ran perfectly on 95. There's no noticeable difference between 95 and 98.

Another option is to use a toluene paint thinners as octane booster.

I said that earlier but he seemed to ignore that and focused on me disagreeing.

I think many octane boosters have potentional for cat poisoning but I've not really looked into it much as they are horrifically expensive. Millers CVL is £10 and treats 20 litres of fuel for example.

Unplug the battery for an 1/2 hour or so then run a couple of tanks of 95 through your car OP.

If you have always run on 98/99 then it is posible the fuel trims are out a touch causing a slightly rough ride, modern ecus can compensate though but will not do so instantly.

Disconnecting the batery can in some cases help wipe the fuel trims stored but just driving around normaly for a while the knock sensors etc... will do their thing and things will be back to normal minus probably a couple of lbft above VTEC crossover, below I doubt it would make much diffrence due to to the dynamic compression ratio of the earlier cam profile (the selling point of VTEC), in any case you would be seriously exceedin the speed limit to notice a diffrence once the ECU has "learnt" the new fuel.

Best to give that a go (im 99.9% sure it will work) if not heamorage money on octane boosters or ship in your own supply of SUL.

Wow, this went 0-Menstrual in three seconds.

I was in the same boat as you can't really get SUL over here, however two chains do an ethanol mix similar to tesco 99 and there isn't a price difference between normal UL so I stick that in both our cars.
