opty 170 @ 2Ghz Denmark core, Retail pack, Stepping: CCBBE 0610 = £106

or

X2 4400+ Toledo 2.2GHz OEM, Unknown stepping, £99

both brand new.

i dont know which to pick, :( what i do know is my board doesnt like going above 268fsb and Wont do more than 1.45 volts...

p.s. im water cooled.

4400 X2. It's faster and I think has the same cache. Watercooling is irrelevant if you are FSB/HTT and voltage limited.

i was thinking that too but i was thinking, if i get a crappy stepping on the X2, i may not get above 2.65 per core :( plus its comming from the states and as its oem would only have 30 day cover... so im still quite unsure,

i could just get the 170, sell my Asrock board and cpu as a combo and pick up a cheap 939 DFi i suppose, allot of hassle reinstalling everything though :(

Not sure why you'd have to reinstall everything for the Opty but not the X2? They are basically the same chip. Unless the motherboard chipset is different on the Asrock?

If it's a choice of ordering from the UK or US for similar chips then get the one from the UK. It's easier to return if it's faulty.

By the sounds of it the stepping is not of much significance. Your motherboard seems to be limited in HTT and voltage so I doubt there would be much difference between the two when overclocked. Unless you buy a good motherboard such as a DFI which wil only bump the cost up (and you may as well get C2D instead if you do that).

i think you misunderstood me, :) i meant i could always sell my old board and buy a second hand DFi for £40 and get the opteron 170 which potentially will clock higher than the X2 4400+, the only difficulty is if i change boards i have to reinstall everything, :(

as for buying C2D it cant offer me anything extra to make me want to buy it. besides if i went to C2D id have to replace my ram and as i have good corsair XMS ram so wouldnt want cheapy stuff, A.K.A major expense to change to a new socket, but even if i could, i definatly wouldnt want C2D. :p

EDIT: opty 170 ordered :) should do me for the next 12 months :)

just out of interest whats the stock multi for both them cpu? i take it 4400 is 11 and 170 is 10?
Yep.

any scientific reason why an opteron would clock more than a normal X2? different core or something?
Same basic design, some minor revisions. Mainly because the Opteron is a server chip with higher quality control, therefore passes more stringent tests.

also bare in mind i knew what cab i would get with the opty 170 and on the right motherboard i know i can get 3.1Ghz per core thanks to water cooling :D

with the X2 4400 i may have gotten a bad cab and as such would have only gotten between 2.5 and 2.75Ghz per core.

The Opteron chips as far as I'm aware have to pass stability testing a lower voltage to the X2, other than that they are identical.

If you're keeping the board you've got at the moment you may actually be better with the 4400 and its higher multi.

looking for a cheap DFi... get thos MM forums open damit ;) :D

The opteron is stressed for longer at lower voltages, logically they should overclock better.
That stepping isnt the best (0550 was the cream of the crop) but it should do around 2.6+

on that stepping u can get just over 3ghz i have a CCBBE 0610DPMW stepping and are sitting on 3.05ghz @1.45v (can't get get 1 more mhz out of it no matter how much voltage i put though it) but thats on a DFI SLI DR

I had this decision 9 months ago.
I chose the 170 and got a bad stepping. I can only get it to 2.6ghz without running silly voltages through it and getting too much heat.

Do the 4400's come with unlocked multipliers?

PS. I'm running my 170 on the A8n-SLi Premium
