Ta :)

Also do you reckon this would be a worthy upgrade from a 3500+ Winnie? I've had it since Nov 2004 (iirc) and never had much luck overclocking it :( Best I managed even with the slackest timings I could run was a barely stable 2.4Ghz - 200Mhz over stock :(

What applications do you usually run?

If you run multi-threaded apps like photo editing software, encoding software, etc you'll notice a huge boost in speed, even with the Opteron at 1.8GHz against the 2.4GHz of your overclocked 3500+ due to the fact that it's a dual core CPU

If you extensively use multi-tasking then you'll also benefit - you could encode a movie and play a game at the same time, for example, without any slowdown unlike on a single core CPU

If you primarily run single threaded applications then the difference won't be nearly as great. In purely single threaded applications the CPU will perform like a 1.8GHz Opteron (equivalent to an A64 3200+). You'll notice a slight drop in performance at stock for these specific applications

The Opteron is a good clocker though and the DFI motherboard and GSkill ram will help it to achieve it's best. The Opteron will very easily overclock to 2.2GHz (roughly on par with your 2.4GHz A64 3500+ due to the cache) and probably far higher

Having a dual core CPU also really helps with the responsiveness of Windows - your PC will feel far more responsive giving an impression of speed

All in all if you can afford it go for it and good luck with the Opteron :)

Thanks for the info :)

I don't tend to do a lot of intensive work bar gaming but I do have an awful lot of things permernantly running (winamp w/ huge playlist/mirc etc...) So I reckon I should see some kinda performance jump there too.

Also I assume games will eventually get optimized for Dual Core at some point bing a further advantage :)

There is also a sense of one upmanship I feel I need to get on my dad but thats another matter
