^It takes 64bit if you have a 64bit CPU & OS

Why not just have a play with various versions? I've found PinguyOS good for "ready to use" and Ubuntu and Mint 12 for more of a play around (given my very limted linux experience I've found it helpful to look at PinguyOS and try to replicate some of its configuration on Ubuntu or Mint).
The best bit is that its trivial to break it and revert back to an older snapshot - great for learning on.
I can state as fact that it takes 64-bit when running 32-bit OS.^It takes 64bit if you have a 64bit CPU & OS
