Orange Broadband problem

My net is 2mb Orange and usual download speeds are 250kbps. At the moment my downloads are 60kbps and speedtest.net shows 0.48mb/s.

Has Orange broadband suddenly changed without being announced or am I just having a problem at my end?

Looks like Orange have kicked in traffic managment possibly - capping to 500kbit/s (~64KBytes/s - yes I know 64KB is 512Kb) is quite common... sucks.

http://www.speedtest.net/ shows that the server connect to 'Xilo' when ive been on speedtest in the past i it has never connected to Xilo.

Surely paying for a 2mb connection and getting a 500kb one is not allowed? Its like me selling silver and saying its actually gold

You shouldn't be getting 500kb 24x7 - unless your connection has had a low sync event resulting in a lower than normal speed profile - which would rise back to normal in 1-5 days.

If its traffic management then typically it would only last from 6pm to midnight or so...

As for the legality thats a whole different story...

Depends whats in the small print of your contract :\

If the problem doesnt resolve itself then try shutting the router/modem off for 20 minutes to reset your session.

If the poor speed is still there after that you should probably give them a call! They might be aware of an issue thats in your area :) at the very least they can start investigating

They send you a letter in the post or at least they sent me one when I downloaded a mere 90GB over 2 months. Although since then Ive downloaded more in 1 month with no cap. The traffic shaping happened dead on 6pm.

I would imagine it depends on your tariff. Check you contract to see if theres a limit on how much you can download per month or per day or whatever :)

They are doing it mate .... was even confirmed to me by a nice Orange call centre person (note the sarcasm) when i rang for the last time to complain about my connection / speed problems. Are you out of contract yet .... if so look around for a new ISP.

How is it possible they can just change the speeds when they want? I might set my own net business up stating 20mb broadband access for £5 a year then drop it to 1byte an hour after the first hour!

Its my dads contract, im moving out in july anyway

have a read at their terms of use:

Am I likely to be affected by the Fair Use Policy?
If you don't use file sharing software or download large files from the Internet it's unlikely you'll ever be affected by this policy. If you do, all we ask is that you do so considerately, perhaps by downloading outside the peak hours of 6pm to midnight. Don’t forget that media streaming, including the streaming of internet radio using devices such as Orange’s own Liveradio, contributes to your use of bandwidth and may, if left permanently on, cause you to be in breach of this policy.

What will happen if my use is very high?
If you only occasionally have very high usage, we're unlikely to be concerned. If it is happening regularly, we may either have to reduce the transmission speed of your broadband while we continue to keep an eye on your usage, or suspend your service and/or possibly close your account.

We don't want to do that, and with your support and goodwill we'll work with you to see if we can avoid this happening.

What a croc of ****. Im sure this fair usuage policy wasnt around when we signed up years ago (at the time freeserve)

so now i am paying for a rapidshare account that i cant use to its full potential

Im sure it wasnt either but over the years Freeserve / Wanadoo / Orange changed their terms of use / policy . If your dad signed up years ago with Freeserve and has never taken them up on any recent offers then he should be long out of his contract (12 months) and is free to request a MAC and transfer to a new ISP. :)

The legality of it should probably stand with this..
they are not providing what the contract informs? it is not your fault that other people use the service - its the providers responsibility to ensure the service is as it says. I would record some speed tests and file a complaint.!
