Just got this email as confirmation from Orange:

Dear Russell

Thank you for your mail regarding the Nokia N80.

I can confirm that Orange have withdrawn the Nokia N80 and have been advised that it's replacement is the Nokia N73.

For further advice and information, please call our Customer Services on 150 from a pay monthly Orange phone, or 07973-100150 from a landline. Our Helpdesk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and any of our representatives will be pleased to assist you.

So does that mean I can call up and ask for an exchange? I want to use my N80 for GPS Satnav but without the latest firmware thats impossible and Orange aren't offering to update to the V4 firmware.

Try taking it to a Nokia shop and getting it upgraded?

edit
What about the on-line update you can do with these phones now?

Nokia will only upgrade branded phones with branded firmware, not generic, I can't see Orange bothering to produce a branded v4 firmware for the N80 now

hey, i've recently been in contact with orange- my n80 has started freezing for 30- 40 seconds after sending a text message. also, i've been getting some error messages on screen after trying to load large images. They (orange) say that it is purely a software error and have advised me to try not to use too many applictions at once!!! For gods sake, this phone is totally amazing, it has literally changed my business life and now they're telling me not to use it as it was designed!!

So what next? Orange have said that they will only authorise a replacement after one of their technical advisers has looked at it. What kind of replacement i've no idea. Can i ask for a different phone, if so how do i know it will work on there obviously bugg riddled network (just my opinion).

Can anyone help me with any of the issues i'm having? especially how to go about getting a new and improved phone out of them. Thanks.

The online updater doesnt support Orange branded N80s as Orange haven't released their version of it and wont now.

So basically, if you have an N80 on Orange and want to use it for Tomtom etc. then you are **** out of luck. Unless you flash the firmware to a generic one yourself thus voiding your warranty and any support from Orange.

If you call Orange they tell you to contact Nokia, if you do so Nokia will tell you they can only flash phones with Orange branded firmware so thus only V3.

So yeah...buggered.

What legitimate options are left?

...Dolph??

Is flashing firmware a naughty subject? I've got a link to company website who can flash the network operator branded firmware with the default one for a small charge.

You send the phone off and 24-48 hours later get it back.

Debrand is £15 and a full debrand and unlock is £25.

Its not naughty, but it does void your warranty and you will lose all support. So not an option.

I am sending this email to Orange:

Hi,

I currently have a Nokia N80 from yourselves which I have had no end of troubles with since upgrading to it. Now having done some digging online I have discovered that it is down to the firmware currently installed in my phone. My main problem is that I am unable to use any GPS Satnav software due to there being a problem with Bluetooth on the N80 in that it will keep losing connection with the Bluetooth GPS receiver. It has been proven that updating the N80 to the latest V4.0623.0.41 firmware will cure this issue.

Now, this is all well and good IF the firmware update was actually available for Orange branded phones. Although Nokia does offer Firmware updates online via their website they DO NOT offer it for Orange branded N80s, having contacted Nokia they say that when a firmware is released that the networks customise the firmware for release to their customers and Orange have chosen not to do this as they have now discontinued sale of them (is this true?). I asked if my phone could be updated with a generic none branded firmware and they said that although it is technically possible unfortunately no service centre is authorised to do so.

When I contacted Orange customer services regarding this issue they told me that Orange has nothing to do with firmware updates for phones and that any branding is installed via software not integrated into the firmware (completely contradicting Nokia). So who is correct?

Which leaves me in a position with no options. Nokia will not update the firmware as they have no Orange branded version and Orange denies all knowledge of any such issue and says to take it up with Nokia?

So I have a phone which is faulty as admitted by Nokia by the release of the new firmware addressing the issue, but cannot update the phone due to the network it's on, and a network who refuses to offer any support for fixing the problem with the phone they provided.

So what do I do?

I look forward to your response in hope of some resolution.

Regards

Russell Oakes

When I took my brothers n80 into our local Nokia shop I asked about them flashing it with unbranded firmware (he was having the text delay problem), they said they would happily do it for £20 but it would void the warranty. I opted for the newest orange firmware which they did for free. It now works perfectly. Also on the nokia site there is now a tool to download, on the n80 page, which fixes the text problem.

Yet again orange stick thier fingers in thier ears and go LA LA LA LA LA ITS NOTHING TO DO WITH US ITS NOKIA!

Get onto trading standards. One of the features of the phone is to be able to use it as a PDA sort of device with the software produced for it. If it is not doing this then its not fit for purpose as its sold. REGARDLESS of if its an orange or a nokia fault you paid ORANGE for the phone not nokia.

I would also say that the N73 is not a replacement for the N80!

well what the hell am i going to do??? what other phones are there that have a wifi connection as thats the main reason i've got this phone? plus it has to be one that orange stock and will give me in order to stop me wandering to there office and unloading my m16 on there sorry ass...

orange are not selling a lot of these n0okias,

i really wanted the nokia n91 but they told me they would never sell this as it has too many faults

and theres a 7 month wait for the n93, which i really want

i suppose this is a good thing from orange? at least they are not selling us faulty phones

:dunno: Maybe the imate sp5?? Or wait for the Nokia N95 (mmm delicious;))

Vodafone already decided to discontinue the n80 & n91 about 6 weeks ago. They will seel them until current stocks run out (predicted end of october)

They're probably getting rid of their stock in anticipation for the new 8GB model.

Not many on Orange, I'm afraid. In terms of Nokias, the E60, E61, E70, N80i, N93 and 9300i have WiFi. They specifically took the WiFi out of the SPV C600, so I'm guessing that they're not too keen on their punters using it.

However, the SPV M3100, M600 and Sony Ericsson P990i all have WiFi and are listed on Orange's website.

so help me out here folks, i have an n80. it is showing signs of the various firmware problems other people have reported. i love the phone but i cant stand the little problems that orange have written into it.

where do i stand on getting a different phone from them?? I've had this current contract (£30/m) since april and i paid £50 for the phone in the first place. What grounds can i ask for a new phone and which one could i choose based on their current selection? The obvious choice is the n73, although it dosnt have wifi it is the updated version of this phone isnt it?? thanks.

dont trust orange, i know sumbody who works for them in the upgrades section..

they honestly dont give a No swearing about their customers, and if you phone them up now and ask to leave, before they used to bend over for you, now they will simply let you leave.

I have had inside evidence that orange have exceeded their targets, and are not after more custom, and are infact trying to loose custom, to improve their sale targets for the following year, thast has not began yet.

I also know somebody who works high up in call centre, and told me they have just sacked 200 employees, ( of whom are employed by an external contracter ) who carry out the upgrades for orange.

I have been on the phone to them earlier about an upgrade i was after. i asked if they would price match an offer, the guy simply saing no, not even listening to what i had to tell him.He said, i will disconnect you if you are not happy. blah blah, so thats evidence of this too.

My mate who works for orange upgrades tells me to stay away, and this persons advice was to move over to the three network, much better coverage, deals and structure

I apologise for my spelling mistakes in my message, typing too fast for my brain to register hahaha
