Looks like its gonna be fixed...
Taken from the Nokia website...

I know lots of people on here have been emailing the Orange CEO over the home screen issues; but i have only just got a reply - and we seem to have some success, my reply was different to what other people have received! Read below:
Dear Mr.
Thank you for your e-mail to Sanjiv Ahuja, Chief Executive Officer of
Orange. Sanjiv has asked me to respond on his behalf.
Orange software is added to our handsets to provide additional
functionality, such as the ability to have a second line on the same
handset. However, we have listened to the feedback of customers like
yourself and all future Nokia handsets launched on the Orange Network will
have the Orange Home Screen function added but with the ability to disable
it.
Currently, Orange cannot retrospectively fix handsets because during our
testing, we found there was a probability that some handsets could become
disabled. So rather than risk leaving customers with non-functioning
handsets we decided to install a new software package on all future new
phones.
Orange does not recommend the removal of the software by Third Party
companies and cannot be held responsible for any damage caused to the
handset if this is attempted.
Whilst I appreciate this information may not be entirely to your
satisfaction, I trust you consider the action we have taken to resolve the
Orange Home Screen problem to have gone some way to restoring your faith
in Orange.
Yours sincerely
Derek Lean
