My mum is off to Australia in August - for the whole of August.
She is staying with relatives so will be in contact etc, however I do like the idea of her being able to use her mobile while she is away....just in case.

The phone in question is a few years old, nothing special and it's on Orange PAYG.
So for the questions:

Can you Orange PAYG in Austalia? Or would we possibly have to look at getting her a SIM only monthly contract just for August?

Remembering the good old days of Dual-band, Tri-Band, does a phone have to be anything special to be used in Australia?

I know a call to Orange would be easiest, but I know there are plenty of experts here :)

Why not just buy a PAYG sim out there??...im pretty sure Aus has PAYG sim cards so will be better for her to pick one up there rather than take one from here to there. Plus if she takes one from here then its going to be pretty expensive for texts and calls.

Its what i usually do when im in Canada, i have a Rogers PAYG sim card which i top up with £30 worth of credit...makes it easy to stay in touch with my bro, sis in law and friends over there...and i dont have to worry about stupidly high charges appearing on my bill.

Mind u it wouldnt work if the phone was locked as it needs to be unlocked before it can be used overseas. If it isnt unlocked then your better off using a PAYG sim card from here.

I honestly hadn't thought of that :)
I cannot for the life of me remember the model of phone she has - but I'm sure it would cost next to nothing to unlock (if anything).
Then just grab a PAYG SIM for a month in Aus....perfect.

Cheers.
