Orange won't let me keep my number so I want to choose a new one - HOW?

I've had an Orange value promise tariff matched to the virgin PAYG tariff for the last 5 years or so. I'm now starting a new contract on Orange and want to keep the same number but they won't let me since I cannot transfer numbers Orange to Orange. Keeping the same number is only allowed for upgrades or coming from another network.

I've a decent memorable number at the moment and was wondering if there is anywhere that will allow me to choose a good number on a PAYG tariff then port my number across? I'm not interested in spending loads on a 'gold' number though.

Port your current number to another networks payg, then port it back to your new orange number, thus overcoming the porting within the same network problem.

Nice idea, hadn't thought of that! I've ordered a free Vodafone SIM but would Easymobile be better to port there and back to Orange fast?

Vodafone told me that I cant transfer my number onto the free SIM and that I should have specified my PAC code when I ordered it. Their online cart has the option to specify a PAC code when the SIM cards are £2 but not when they're free.

Now my PAC has expired!

You can go from Orange Contract -> Orange PAYG -> Orange Contract. I did that when I used to have the same Virgin deal as you, and spending a while on PAYG isn't too bad (it's supposed to be 3 months minimum, but they let me have a PAC code after 3 weeks... so either it doesn't apply to Orange Contract -> PAYG customers, or they were being sloppy).

Customer services said I have to get a PAYG connection on another network :/
