Ordering Macbook on Friday...

I'm in the same boat as you beatmaster, might wait as long as possible on the offchance Merom arrive, somehow I doubt it now :(

I was wondering how much difference 2GB makes.

I'am concidering getting the 1.83 Macbook with the std 512mb ram and them getting a single 1gb stick to put in, then get another when prices fall, damn memory pricing! Does having a non matched pair make much difference?

Which Ipod are you planning on getting, i was thinking the 4gb nano as it will only cost £29 and should see the biggest return when sold!

I was planning on getting either the LArobe Black & White for MacBook 13,3" or Tucano Second Skin Guaina for MacBook 13,3" both are available from the apple store.

If you are running parallels then the 2GB does make a difference because the VM eats up a big chunk but with the 2GB it allows you to work in
OSX and the VM without any problems.

Personally, I bought 2GB because the 1GB from Apple was 2x512MB which is done to make it cheaper and also because the shared graphics benefits with 2 DIMM's. However I though that was limiting my upgrade potential so I just went for 2GB for £120.

BTW: I've sold my 4GB White nano now and I decided to upgrade to the 8GB nano G2.

Id go for parallels over a dual boot too

I agreed with you up till that point.

Parallels is ok, but won't use the total 100% of your hardware, so if you do choose some windows program that particularly needs a lot of hardware grunt, it won't handle it totally. I am talking about games and big apps here though.

yeh just spoke to cousin again, its:
3yr manufacture promise and 1yr software and basic apple support

Close. It's 3 years parts and labour and 90 days software and basic apple support :)

I'm just wondering what happens if the mac devlops a fault. Anyone had any experience with returning it? Do they pay for the labels or you have to pay to send it back?

Brocon - Correct :)

They usually send out a box with labels attached by FedEx or someone, then FedEx turn up again a day or so later to pick it up!

I paid for the extra applecare, if you do it through education its only about £50 for the 3 years.

Is it worth paying for? I mean without Applecare do they still send out labels? They really don't make it clear what you get for your money in terms of Applecare on the HE deal :(

Oh Noes something wacky just entered my head! I start uni in 10 days and I think I need one. I was keep money for a mac mini to use as a htpc, but the macbook could also achieve along with allowing me to have laptop

Decisions . . decisions!!!

I'll suscribe to this thread, because I'd also like to know about the HE support and possibly more on RAM Price and so on :)

I was bored and without a life, I read parts of the AppleCare Protection Plan - AFAK, it's extending the 90day service of phone, technical help to 3 years. Parts and labour to 3 years instead of 1?

I'd gladly pay £50 for the 3 years peace of mind - which I did.

One thing to note:
Under Applecare Protection Plan Terms and Condition;
Section 2e 'limitations. The plan does not cover' , paragraph (ii);

"Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse..... bla bla bla yak yak yak... lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes;"

Acts of God?!?!
Like what? The Boxing Day Tsunami? Like the next Great Pleague?

I find that very ambi.

Macbook Ordered :)

Decided against Applecare for £58 as I managed to eventually beat it out of a telephone advisor that all it is was just technical support via the phone/internet that the extra £58 was paying for. He was very pushy in saying but Applecare gives you warranty on parts and labour for a 3 years instead of 1...I was like right, so does HE standard agreement :p Although suprisingly he didn't know that, yeah right!

Went with:

Macbook 1.83Ghz
1Gb RAM (2x 512Mb)
80Gb Hard Drive
~Usual rest of specifications

Est. ship date of the 26th Sept with delivery on the 5th Oct :( :)

Can't wait!

Nice one BeatMaster, I demand some pics once it arrives :D

A few questions, if you don't mind answering?

1) Where did you order your RAM from?

2) Final Price you paid?

3) What case did you order/ordering in the future?

Also I'd be greatful if anyone could link me to the HE shop. I was on it last night but can't for the life of me find it again :\

Does the white version get 'yellowy' over time? Reason I ask . . people usually develop this with white gadgets such white DS lite and so on. I'd really go for the black version but it's way over my budget!

1) RAM from Apple

2) £757 but going to be £815...see below

3) Ordered a Second Skin :)

Yellowy-ness has been fixed now with new plastics.

I just had to cancel my order since I did to go with the Applecare on second thoughts, I think it'll be much easier if I have any problems plus a higher resale value and can only get it when you order. However now stuck waiting on money been refunded before can reorder Macbook, damn!

Didn't go with a Nano, not sure on resale value of them now and got a 30Gb iPhoto :o

Will keep you updated!

30gig ipod video?
if so, how much would it end up costing after the £100 rebate?
Excludes Video, only photo/nano.

I need 2GB of RAM, as I'll be doing Software Engineering at Uni. It'll be a gem to run 3 OS's. If I were to say buy a macbook then get my own ddr2 ram, would this break the apple warranty?

RAM upgrade wouldn't default the warranty - so does changing the HDD. They've made it easier to self install - warranty is however void if you messed up the macbook if you installed incorrectly - e.g. sticking the SATA HDD with IDE HDD, with brute force e.t.c.

Just remember to keep the original RAM/HDD - much easier during RMA situation (or at least that's what many told me on other forum)

Oh and BeatMaster - more waiting times? Hope you recieve your item earlier - it's damn horrible waiting.

So the colour issue is fixed then? I've still very careful with my MacBook, always washed my hands and clean dry them before using it and got a lint-free cloth next to the MacBook to clean off dust, prints and stuff - this is gonna be some kind of an OCD for now.
