hey guys, just wanted yours's opinions before I place the order at the end of the week! any tweaks/improvements/changes that can be made please let me know!

a modular psu? if you just want one gpu, then how about a Antec new truepower 650,750w model.

if you wanted sli, then a bigger 850-1000w psu is needed.

i have a samsung f1 already so thats alright!

ooo sorry i havent got a clue about psu's whats the bad thing about modular?

and i was debating between 2x 460's or 1x 480 not sure which is better

Me personally i would stick with the single 480 simply because 2 cards(SLI) causes more problems than a single card setup.

However the GTX 460s would be faster than a single 480,but a 480 will not struggle in any games anyway,

nothings bad about them, psu with that sort of wattage will have LOTS of cables, a modular psu has detachable cables for a tidy build.

supposedly, the fact that theres an extra break in the wire (where it plugs to the main box as opposed to being hardwired) means that the supplied power isnt as clean. However, this is so negligible, that it is only to be taken into consideration if your planning to crack out the LN2 and attempt to break some records. For the everyday you and me, modular is the way to go, for the reasons mentioned above.

the main problem i see, like others is the PSU.

first off all, for high end, high wattage psu's modular is really the way to go, espesially in smaller cases, as there will jsut be too many cables otherwise, and no where to put them all

also, the wattage is no good.
its way too high for a single card, and not high enough for 2 cards.
GTX480's in SLI need 850 minimum for SLI

i would go with either a 650 or 850, prefereable corsair HX, or Antec

Hey supergt,

looks like you are spending £1500 on a computer?

What are you going to use it for? . . . if you cut the build cost down by £500 would that make you happy or? :D

Hey! yesss its a university present... and i have around that budget! anything saved wont be saved by me! so may aswell spend it all :P

the PC will be used for games (obviously :D) and just the standard watching movies, streaming full 10gig 1080p files and video encoding too

okay so is the PSU i linked not modular? and what would be a good modular PSU? the antec ones you said? :D

the corsiar HX range seem to be the creme of the crop at the mo. As said before, either the 650w or the 850w model depending on if you want another gtx480 in the future. If you're looking at single cards setups, then the OCZ ModXstream are also a pretty good brand (not because i have one or anything...), but only do 500w, 600w or 700w models.

university yeh.

someone a few days ago mentioned they charged a small fee for their student friends to use their high end rig to do some speedy rendering for them.

could make money of this thing!

thanks a lot for the advice guys/gals! just one more thing though!

would a Corsair HX 650W be able to power SLI 460s?

the 850W takes it over budget and was thinking of saving a little of the parents dosh by getting the 650w and 1 460 now, and then say xmas or in a few months get another 460 to sli it!

would have course love to be able to have 2x 480s eventually but would require forking out for the 850w now which wont be able to happen !

appreciate the advice !

Hey supergt, :)

Can I ask a question? . . . would I be right in thinking that new students get some huge big cheque ££ or something when they start? . . . I'm asking because I have seen quite a lot of threads where people are starting university and they all seem to be buying £1500 computers?

Do you get money to burn or do you have to pay it back? . . . is there nothing else you could use some money for or?

the PC will be used for games (obviously :D) and just the standard watching movies, streaming full 10gig 1080p files and video encoding too
That's really not what you need a £1500 Intel® Core™i7 system for! :p

Did you not consider an AMD® machine? . . . are you seriously just gonna burn £1500 on a computer to play games and other simple stuff when you don't actually need to spend that much?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and feedback!

cornflakes)
No?

I'm asking supergt if he actually understands he's about to spend a lot more money than he needs too?

If students get money that "evaporates" if not spent with one week I fully understand . . . however if its real money he's about to waste it maybe?

aha this isnt from a student loan actually :P

since i was 13 ive always bought my own parts and paid for my PC myself! while the other siblings have gotten theres given, so this is a sort of mixture of going away present and considering im on a dual core 3 year old PC that cant run WoW and opera at the same time without rebooting (on a 17inch tft 1280/1024 vga monitor) they thought they would treat me :D

i have that budget and whatever doesnt get spend i dont get and would want it to last as long as possible since it will be the only PC i will ever get from them paid for :D so you can understand why i would want to go wild! i would eventually want to go dual monitor/3dvision/whatever comes next so yeah i want what i can get :P i have considered the AMD machine but it just means losing hyperthreading and 2 gigs of RAM which i kinda want aha :D

i crit wall of text for 19000 there sorry

P.S i tried asking for 1500 quid cash but they say it either gets spent on a new PC or nothing hence here i am :P

@ Big Wayne i was wondering when you will going to start advising the OP about an AMD rig:rolleyes:
