Ordering today - best for dual core?

Yeah best add an overclock to that. My 4200 was at 2.8GHz ish and that def made a nice difference to performance. Going from the 2.8GHz 4200 to a 3.6GHz i5 was nice, but in places where I was GPU limited anyway the difference in performance wasn't tremendous - as expected.

My money would be on the 5770, or a second-hand 4870. These can be had relatively cheaply now.

TBirdUK I do have to apologise...I missed the part which you said his 8800GTX 'broke'. I thought your friend is 'upgrading' from a working 8800GTX.

If it is for replacement, then HD5770 or HD4890 is the way to go...but would cost slightly more than £100. See if you can find a HD5770 similiar to the price which niggyg got his (but it's probably gonna be hard with the VAT back to 17.5%). I'd avoid HD4870, because of the heat...

Also...yes, definitely try to have a look into overclocking the 4200+

Sorry for the confusion.

You can pick up a XFX 4890 for £100 if you look around. To put it in perspective thats about as fast a GTX280.

The 5700 card are decent performers when it comes to DX9, but I think the narrow memory bus will become a Achilles heel over the next year.
