Should be ordering tonight (yay!), just want someone to go over what I've decided on:

i5
Asus P7P55D LE
G.Skill Ripjaw
Samsung 500GB F3
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus

I currently have the OCZ ModXStream 700w and the NZXT Lexa S case.

Only thing remaining is a graphics card, which I've opened a thread on the graphics section for.

Trying to keep everything under £590. I'm also trying to keep all PCB's black, just to make things awkward ;)

So is it all above board, and is there anything I could reduce costs on and maybe get that 5850?

Cheers guys :)

no offence dude but that cooler looks nasty... i'd save up a little bit longer and get a megahalems or something.

apart from that, looks to be a good setup

may i ask; what res are you intending to game at? bearing in mind a 5850 *might* be a bit too much if it's lower res (1280x1024 etc etc)

Thanks for the replies guys.

To be fair I like the look of it and it has really good reviews, plus I have serious doubts about the Megahalem fitting inside my case, plus it's less money for other parts of my system, plus I'm already struggling to afford the 5850...

1680x1050, with the possibility of getting an Eyefinity setup in the future, although I am still on the fence about this.

I think the only way to do that would be to go AMD.

I also plan on doing a lot of CPU intensive tasks and right now the i5 seems to have the best bang for buck, even more so when you consider how well they overclock. Nothing against AMD (first PC was AMD few years back now), but they have a bit of catching up to do currently.

I agree. I don't do much demanding stuff other than gaming, so the 5850 was a higher priority for me than the I5 - but if I did other CPU intensive stuff I'd have had a much harder decision to make.

For £20 I'd be getting this, the Arctic Cooling freezer 7 pro.

AMD are far from incapable of cpu intensive tasks and are dominating bang for buck. What specifically do you have in mind? I suspect you need to decide which of gfx and cpu you care more about before ordering. It's easily possible to make an all rounder, but generally it's best to bias the machine towards intended use. As you haven't told us what that is, we cannot advise.

I really do find the Freezer 7 ugly :o it's also (from the reviews I've seen) not as efficient.

As for the CPU, i5 from pretty much every review I've seen handle tasks faster. I want to be able to compile code quickly, I'm talking an OS kernel as my OS is slowly growing in size, I'll also be compiling libraries for my OS as well as for console development. Taking into consideration the fact I want black PCBs, that brings the AM3 mobo price up, it also appears that Phenom struggles to reach 4GHz, and clock for clock i5 is faster anyway (again, based on reviews I've read). I was hoping some concrete info would come about for their new CPU (Thuban?) but it just seems too far away.

CPU is work, GPU is recreational; I'm also stupidly hoping that magically prices will drop soon (even with VAT increase). I know I know, I need a wakeup call :D

Not to mention the fact that 1156 is pretty much already a dead platform (apart from some new low end chips) the performance difference between an i5 and a Phenom II Quad is near as makes no difference to you. I'd go for AM3 at the minute, considering there's at least one major upgrade confirmed for the socket.

Ah. Compilation loves raw cpu performance. The difference between a kernel compile on my [email protected] and my i7 @ 2.6 is ludicrous. In that case I agree i5 is where it's at, on of the cheaper ones too as you're unlikely to want hyperthreading, so the 750 it is.

I suggest you drop the coolermaster entirely then and get the H50. It's £50 rather than 20, but it reflects taking your 750 up to the 4ghz mark quietly. You'll love this while working, a 4ghz nehalem is wonderful. It'll bite into the graphics budget, but work generates money so should come first. On 1680x1050 I suspect a second hand 4890 would be ideal.

In all honesty I'd be inclined to ignore graphics completely and get a 920 with 6gb backing it up. Preferably buying ocz or corsair ram second hand (lifetime warranty with whoever is holding the sticks). But then, I'm running an 8800gt so clearly don't care very much about games, no doubt the graphics forums are telling you that the skies will fall if you don't get the 5850 :)

Sorry not had chance to reply.

@Superewza: Taking a look at prices, I'd save myself less than £2 by going AMD (to fit my specs), really not worth it.

As for 1156 being dead, I don't plan on upgrading processor for a long time, I'm not the sort of person who constantly upgrades, hence why this is an entire build, there's nothing worth upgrading from my current rig... The last thing I want is to spend £117 on a CPU, then in 6 months time spend another £XXX on another CPU.

@hux: I checked around and apparently that cooler blocks only 1 RAM slot on that mobo, so with a bit of luck the Ripjaw won't cause me any issues.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get myself the rig and a 5850, but I'll wait until into the new year (for the graphics). Sure it means I'll be running on a 8500GT, but that'll make the upgrade even sweeter ^.^

I use the Arctic pro 7 and its bloody great keeps my CPU sitting around 29 Deg on idle and never above 50 Deg no matter the load its I'm pretty heavily O/clocked (from 2.4 to 3.2)
