Retiring my old hx850 and on reading reviews on this they noted not to put it fan side down, although my 750D has the filter in that position. The reasoning was that the model I had bought is semi passive and would trap heat thus adding wear to the components.

Toms review said this, was it all guff

I'd download the instruction manual from the website and see what the official line is.

If it gets too warm the fan will kick in so it shouldn't be and issue.
Especially if the unit is upside down it won't be sucking in warm air from the rest of the PC.

Do a google search for toms hardware reviews and you’ll get the picture.

Thought as much. Just that one review had me questioning my sanity :)

Yeah official guidance tends to ignore that most cases have bottom filtered vents.
I guess it could be argued with the fan facing up does help remove warmer air from inside the case.

Take the ASUS THOR PSU for example... you have to mount it fan up if you want the OLED watts meter to be displayed on the correct windowed / cut out side of your case.

At the end of the day neither way is incorrect as long as the PSU fan is getting clean unrestricted air to pass through.

Bottom facing I would think is probably preferable, generally speaking. If the case has a bottom grille the PSU has its own supply of fresh air. Just make sure you always have a filter in place as if it draws air in from beneath it could quite easily suck up a load of dust and detrius which you don't want inside the PSU.

And make sure the PC is sat on a hard surface, you dont want any carpet getting in the way of airflow.
