This has bugged me for years, I randomly remember it sometimes and don't understand. On the big box version, on the back there was a shot of a unit that you could not get in the game, it looked like a MLRS type launcher but it had two rockets and was grey, there was also a double barrelled tank which didn't exist.
I've tried to find a picture of the back of the box but failed. Anyone know the story behind those two units?

Edit: Omg I found it: Odd thing is NOD has a guard tower but don't remember them having those, also note the NOD emblem on the construction yard.

Yep easily in my top 5, pretty much the game of my childhood, it got me into PC gaming.

Me too. I played Tomb Raider 1 with no sound at all and at a lower resolution (iirc you pressed F1 and it went from 640x480 to something painfully low!) as my 1mb gfx card could not cope.

I used to play c&c in Windows 95 but boot from DOS sometimes to play c&c funpark!

I was more into Red Alert but I had C&C on my PSX. I swear I got a bug on the last GDI mission, Nod stopped attacking me and I had ages to build as many Mammoth tanks as I could.
I swear I'd see different FMV clips every time I played too.

Fantastic game. Spent hours upon hours on this... although I did have it on the PS1...

Same! I was sad because it missed the dinosaur missions but I think it had Covert Ops.

The unit you're thinking of is a SSM launcher if I recall correctly. It is only available in a multiplayer game, and is (imo) about as good as the V2s are in Red Alert which came out just afterwards.

There were a few other multiplayer only units like the chem warriors, which I remember being gutted about :p

The FMV sequences is due to which mission you picked on the map (Europe as GDI, Africa as NOD). All of the critical storyline missions had the same FMVs/maps/objectives though, you could tell because there would only be one choice on the world map.

I think that was due to you being able to chose which mission to do, but I may be wrong! I last played it about a year ago but I was only in year 4 when I got it for xmas!

I really need to see if I can get this to run on Win 7, maybe Dosbox would work. Or I could download off PS3 classics store!
Guess nobody knows the mystery about those units then.

OMG thank you so much. It has bugged me since 1995! Those units were not in the instruction manual iirc.

the tank with 2 barrels is the heavy tank right? the single barrel was medium and then was the light tank with the circular top. Yea NOD didnt have a guard tower in game :( maybe thats because the devs thought they have the obelisk of light instead to make both factions fair? Also the logo on the construction yard maybe removed because it caused too much lag :D

Get C&C first decade and install it.

Install latest official patch.

Then install latest unofficial patch.

This makes the original work on Win 7 :)

No, Nod had the light tank circle top and that was it, GDI had Medium which is what it looks more like but only had one barrel. I think you're confused with Red Alert ones.
Command and Conquer the First Decade works fine in Windows 7 for me!

Can pick it up for circa £8 brand new online!

Ok I'll look into that, thanks :)

Those types of guard towers are only in some single player missions iirc. But NOD can build Obelisks when you get far enough into the game. Not sure what that double barreled tank is, it looks like the Heavy tank from Red Alert but it can't be. Possibly a mod. Also I think that rocket launcher thing is in one of the campaign missions too.

It's a screenshot off the back of the original big box so I don't think it's a mod, really don't recall the rocket launcher as a buildable thing at least.
Also, anyone get a different ending for GDI end?
SPOILER WARNING

Had Kane get vaporised by Ion cannon, and one he gets buried by rubble. Considering the ion cannon ending he shouldn't have been in Tiberium Sun

It is? Ah sorry I didn't fully read the OP, I got a bit excited when I saw an image of C&C, epic game, though I had it on the PS1. :D

Think I also saw the Ion Cannon ending, or at least it rings a bell. I might be thinking of Tiberium Wars though where you destroy one of the facilities with the Ion Cannon but he isn't actually there.

Heh it's ok, we've all been there. I don't know what the Tiberium Wars were?!!? To Google!

From what I remember:
- Heavy tanks don't make an appearance until Red Alert, where the Soviets get them. In C&C, NOD don't get anything 'heavier' than a light tank, instead making up for it with Stealth and Flame tanks if you build the tech centre.
- GDI on the other hand, get Medium and Mammoth tanks.

- GDI get the two guard tower variants. One with machine guns, the other (creatively named Advanced Guard Tower) with heat seeking missiles and machine guns. When I first saw it I felt like it was Dune 2 all over again ;)
- To balance, NOD get the turret (remember them? :p) and the Obelisk.

Re: multiplayer only units such as the SSM/chem warrior/etc:
They are in the manual (or at least, they're on the tech tree) but there should be an asterisk or a small print somewhere that says they're only available in multiplayer mode. That said, some campaign missions might feature a selection of these units.
