**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

I've been playing as 'toss and have been doing fairly well (6 wins 3 losses so far today) but every time I get rushed by marine/marauders I always fail. I can't seem to spot it in time and never have enough Zealots up to defend from it.

Any tips for repelling a marine/marauder rush?

Really depends on the map. For something like Lost Temple where you have reasonably narrow locations, get a few sentries in your army mix so you can throw down some forcefields and cut their army in half. Taking advantage of choke points and not letting the terran army get any sort of reasonable surround is essential if you're only using gateway units. On more open maps you need to be careful with positioning, as terrans are unreasonably good at kiting, especially with concussive shell on marauders. That's where sentries come in to block off any retreats.

Also be aware marauders eat through stalkers like paper, so it's useful to tailor your army accordingly. Heavier on zealot for more marauders, or a few more stalkers vs marines as a very general rule. (be aware that concussive shell can effectively nullify even charged zealots without sentries to back them up).

I personally enjoy a 2 gate robo opening vs terran, so you have the option of getting out some immortals to help deal with heavy marauders and observers for general scouting and detection vs banshees/ghosts etc.

Either that or just DT rush :p

What's your build order?

Depends on map and how early. but generally i find that Sentry's really turn the tide early game. you can block ramps off cutting their army in half. and also guardian shield really cuts down the damage of the Marine/Marauder combo.

As Alex has said, you'll need to react to what unit composition they have. so as a general rule, If they have more maruders, have more Zealots. If they have more marines, have more Stalkers.
But my best advice would be to make use of your Sentry's (only 1-2 are needed early on)

Normally go for something along the lines of:

9 pylon
12 gate
15 gas
17 pylon
19 gas

and then either 3 gates or 2 gate robo. Normally go 3 gate with templars because the storm is so powerful.

Im no Protoss expert, Scott/Kar/Rob/Alex are far better than me at this, but i think you may be going for your 2nd gas too early?

I'd go with:
9 Pylon
12 Gate
15 Gas
16 Pylon
17/18 Core

Doesnt that sound about right? ... either way.. thats my "bodge-it" Protoss opening build order :D

Yep, too early. The earliest I get gas is:

9/10 pylon
12 Gate
14 Gas
15/16 pylon (note that this allows a decent margin for constant production of probes/other units through the 18 supply block)
17/18 core
19/20 Gas or even later depending on how i want to spend the early minerals (say, getting a zealot out or more gateways)

This gives enough gas to get warp gate and a stalker started exactly when the cyber core finishes. Then throw down a couple more gates or a robo and you're in business. Otherwise you're delaying your tech to get gas that you will find difficult to spend in the short run.

A lot of people going for gateway heavy units (with few sentries) will wait on that second gas even longer, and just focus on minerals with one vespene geyser running in order to mass up a ton of stalkers/zealots from, say, 4 warp gates :).

Be careful with HTs off of one base. They're insanely good against big terran balls, but you need a decent amount of 'basic' units as well to clean up the remains at the end and defend your templar while they get into position. I hate teching off of one base, and the gas cost of not only getting templar but then proceeding to use them is so huge that it will set your actual army size quite a way back before they become effective.

My advice would be to tech up to a twilight council, then once you have an expansion down, get those extra gas geysers and throw down the Templar archives to research storm.

When you have 6-7 gateways up massing basic units alongside a few HTs, then that's when your army gets really scary vs a MMM terran player.

Ben. 1698 if anyone fancies playing some. I hate playing online games with random match ups because they normally suck big time, and thats hard for me to say that in SC2 but it happens!

1 base templar is simply impossible. 2 base templar is still risky. 2 base colossus into templar when you have 3 or 4 bases is the safest way to get templar.

I tend to delay my second gas until 5-6 food after my cyber core. The extra probes in minerals helps a lot. But the earliest you should get your 2nd gas is after your cyber core.

Thanks blizzard for fixing my account! 3 Weeks of waiting in limbo, and their solution? Demote me to bronze rank 1. What a joke.

Ok the only thing that's beating me at the minute is Protoss mass Void Ray, it just chews through my base! How the hell do I counter that?

Make more marines and kill them before they charge.

Most players I watch see void rays and go OH CRAP, VOID RAYS, better back off and not attack them for as long as possible! Oh, they're charged now because I waited so long? Well, better attack now then.

Then die.

I don't see many void ray attacks anymore. Stim'd marines shred them. Chuck in a thor and vikings range and you kill them all the time.

if you're terran you could also get 1 thor then just mass repair it. It'll do plenty of damage vs the voidrays, and if they're clumped the spash will own them.

You could also try vikings which outrange voidrays by 3 afaik, and with a little micro you can win that fight.

Or you could use marines ie the first unit in the game, which when stimmed in a decent sized ball do lots of damage, especially if you focus fire.

The other option if you scout it is to throw down some missile turrets and if they are endangered send a couple of scv's to repair

I had a PvP recently where my opponenet walled in with canons and went mass Void Rays, at one stage in the game he said "Sorry but I'm going to win". I proceded to mass blink stalkers and ripped him apart, he didn't have anything else to say.

I really do hate Bronze league.

I DESPISE BRONZE SO MUCH!!!! (no offense)

but EVERY player is a BM'er who insists on LIFTING ALL BUILDINGS and flying to random parts of the map just to waste time and trying to rebuild and mass siege tanks...SO annoying
