**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

I am so crap at this game. Won 1 out of 4 placement matches so far. Just got beat by about 8 marines, I only had 1 zealot out because I was busy with other structures. :(

Won my first match in the bronze league! :p

I must admit, it feels very nice to win at this game, but I'm just so bad it hurts. :(

Replay for anyone that cares! I wouldn't mind some advice.

Well done :) it's easy to get thrown off when you get cannon rushed. In gold league, if i ever get cannon rushed, it'll come out of the fog of war. Not quite sure what your opponent was thinking starting right next to your mineral line. When you're scouting, it's a good idea to check the fog in your base for really early hidden probes. scouting on 10 you were probably fine though.

Because you were a bit thrown off, it looks like as you get a bit further in you have about 300 minerals sitting around. You had enough probes to happily support 3 gateways. Best advice I can give is if you're building probes and units but your money's consistently quite high (above 300 say on one base), then start building another production structure. Gateways are usually good as they provide the cheap protoss units (well..i say cheap..no such thing as a cheap unit with protoss :p) which make up the core of an army.

At least you were making units though, your opponent seemed to be sitting on a huge cache of funds doing nothing at all. Mothership rush maybe? :p

More general advice would be to just practice more with the start of your build. Get it so that you're always building probes, and are making buildings exactly when you have the funds to do so.

I'm a protoss player myself, and my basic opening goes:

constant probes up to 10.
Pylon when i have exactly 100 minerals and the 10th probe is building
chrono up to 12 probes
gateway when i have exactly 150 minerals.

whether you build a pylon on 9 or 10 is a matter of preference, but the point is that you can shave a lot of time off of your entire build by getting the beginning down well :)

Hope this helps, and well done on your first match

Watching your replay now. 5 mins in and I've noticed a few things. You stay on 1 gateway for way too long. 9 pylon and 12 gateway is perfect most of the time to start out with so good job on that. Get one of your gas next (at 14), then another pylon at 15 and then your pylon and gateway should finish at the exact same time. So you can put down your cyber core right as your gateway finishes. Probably around 16-17 supply depending when you chrono boost. As for your 2nd and 3rd gateway, I like to put my 2nd down as the cyber core is building. Then the third once warp gates is researching - they'll finish at the same time which is a nice timing. As for 2nd gas, get that whenever you have spare minerals when your cyber core is building. You don't really need 2 gases until your cyber core is done and you're getting stalkers and sentries.

And that's another thing, you haven't chorno boosted at all yet. You want to chrono your probes as much as you can. Chronoing your warp gates is good too. Don't chrono units unless you're going for an early rush. I've also noticed a big problem - you only have 2 dudes on gas. You need 3 in each assimilator. And in general, you're just not making enough probes. At the beginning of the game you want to have a probe building at all times. Try and keep that in mind - probes always building.

About 7 mins in you build a cannon - you don't really need this. That 150 minerals could've been spent on another gateway which would've been more useful. Try not to use static defense much, especially if you're staying on one base. There are some builds that really need cannons, like the 2 gate fast expand on lost temple and blistering. It's best to build cannons only when you need them, like if you scouted a stargate or something in this match. You've also had your cyber core up for a few minutes but haven't researched warp gates yet - do that as fast as possible.

Ok and now you push with the immortal and win. That's a nice push to do, but you got it out a bit late. Mostly due to lack of gas from only having 2 guys on the assimilators and only having 2 gateways with no warp gates. Interesting though, your opponent didn't make a single ground unit the entire game, just a void ray.

I've probably said a lot here lol. I'm no expert by any means so take what I say with a grain of salt. :p

Thanks a lot for the help guys! I'll take it all in and keep trying.

I just played against a Zerg for the first time. He straight out ling rushed me. Nothing worse than having 4 or 5 zealots and seeing a massive swarm of zerglings come for you!

2 or 3 zealots on your ramp in hold position mode sort that right out. :p

If he really wants to get into your base, the zealots will just stand there and hit, they won't move. If you don't have them on hold position they'll chase and let the lings in, so remember to hold position.

Alright, so far every Terran I've faced have just went mass marine/marauder. What's the best way to counter this?

If it's a big early push then I'd say Zealot/High Templar. You'll want the psi storm w/amulet and charge in upgrades.

Colossi are vulnerable to stimmed marauders in the early game, but if you have time to get enough forces then you can use a colossus/sentry/stalker army. Sentries cut off/halve the terran forces using force fields, the stalkers kill the front units while the colossi inflict terrible terrible damage on the main bulk of the enemy army. It's all about making sure that the enemy doesnt get too close to your colossi so you can snipe them in groups from a safe distance using force fields.

In fact, whatever you're doing vs terran, get sentries :D had a really silly game in beta where i took a zealot/sentry/stalker force, waited until my terran opponent pushed out then got into his base and endlessly forcefielded his ramp so he couldnt get his army back in :p

Colossus are easier to manage in general. I'd recommend them over templars until you're pretty comfortable controlling your army. Another thing Sean, you didn't really hotkey your army. You'll be able to position yourself better if you hotkey your units.

One of the things that annoys me about the hotkey feature in SC2 is that even when you press the hotkey, all it does is select the units. Isn't it possible for them to be selected and for the camera to automatically move to them? I still have to move my cursor all the way across the map to the units if I want to actually make them do anything.

I think it bothers me because I remember playing Zero Hour and it had this feature. That was a long time ago but it was useful!

double tap the hotkey to focus on the units :)

Is there a trick to this?
Got to aroundabout the havens fate mission on normal difficulty and cant get any further, on any of the missions...

My small attack forces get flattened and building huge waves takes too long..
Is the whole point of the game to turtle until the last minute?

If it's Haven's Fall you're talking about, I can sympathise. Played from 3am to 6:30am this morning and I'm just starting to feel I might gain the upper hand. What I'm doing is focussing on a settlement at a time, obliterate it and pull back to save my forces. Roaming around the map with an army will only see them flattened very quickly.

Make sure you send medics and SCV's with your troops for constant healing goodness. Make sure your base is bullet/bomb/nuclear proof as to not distract your attention with irritating micromanagement every attack on your base, leaving you solely to focus on taking on the objective.

I know it's hard (I play on Brutal, it's almost impossible at times), but just a bit of perseverance will get you there.

You learn more from losses. Don't worry about strucutes too much. Most games are won or loss with the initial few rushes. Usually only the high level games get to the higher tech, structures and units.

So I'm playing through random team 2v2 gold league at the moment, 1 question, why are me and my randomly assigned team mate coming up against pre-made teams. It wasn't like this in WC3 and completely ruins the 2v2 ladder.

Especially when they have pre-agreed tactics, and I'm typing like a madman to my team-mate to agree on something while macro'ing my build order!

Got to say im getting killed in multiplayer im just having to stick at it and see what i can learn from others. So far ive only played terran maybe i should try the other factions to see if they suit me better
