**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Would anybody like to play 4v4 with me and my friend? If you want, add me and I can invite you into the lobby :)

We're both relatively new to the game still, but would be up for some bigger games rather than just 1v1's :)

Bloody broadband keeps playing up and by the time I get back in I've been dropped :(

Giving up for the night, stupid broadband >.<

Go watch some practice matches online (huskystarcraft) has some good ones as does this channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/ForceSC2strategy

Practice a starting build so that you know how to get setup quickly.

Thanks I'll take a look, I actually just won my second match, given me a bit of encouragement :)

I haven't strayed away from Terran yet, but I'm getting more used to how things work.

I finally did the "in utter darkness" campaign map on brutal, after 3hrs of trying.

I tried alsorts and never got past 2000 kills (the target is 2500). Then, boom - 3260 kills.

In case anyone is interested:

* research improved shields and armour right from the start (essential!)
* warp in dark templars during the first 10 mins or so (before the void rays arrive). They're pretty much invulnerable because very few overseers are sent early on
* during that time, just move your forces from entrance to entrance depending on where the attacks are coming (they mainly come from just one entrance at a time early on)
* once the void rays are available, spam them like crazy. I found 4 starports to be enough. I had 24 void rays towards the end.
* you'll be limited by vespene gas, so use spare minerals to build point defence canons. I found a tight ring around the archive building worked much better than trying to wall-off the entrances, as it lets your forces cluster.
* when the second round of nydus worms come, you (probably) won't be able to hold the lower ground any more (attacks increase in intensity massively after that). So move up and wall off the entrances with point defences as long as you can...

I tried alsorts before this... massed collossi (no chance - far too delicate), massed carriers (no good - run out of fighters and are too slow), and massed dark templars with fighter cover (great until overseers show up, then they all die!).
I struggled with this on hard let alone brutal :p. Speaking from an Achievements point of view, if I complete a mission on Brutal, does it give all the ratings below it as well, or do I have to do them all on every difficulty level?

I found the carriers to be awesome by the way, and they where still killing zerg way after my base was destroyed.

i found that a mixture of collosi/pheonix/DT/Immo/Zea was best, just moved them around to whereever they were attacking from, when the archive fell i just moved to the higher ground.

Yeah, you can do the achievements on any difficulty above the one stated.

The carriers are tough when they have enough fighters, but they seem to run out too quickly against the zerg in that map. Perhaps if you could amass enough of them, but I just never had the resources (gas anyway) to get up to those numbers. I did try massing them, but they just arrive too late - by that time the zerg are sending in overseers so dark templars are useless, and air power is needed.

On hard I tried doing a traditional "you shall not pass" type defence at each of the entrances, using point defences with collossi and a few phoenixes for air support, and it just about worked. I couldn't even get to 1000 kills like that on brutal though...

edit: I actually found the final mission to be harder on brutal. With the 'in utter darkness' map it seems to be a case of finding a strategy that works well. On the final mission though, it seems to be a case of timing the building and placement of forces perfectly, and replenishing lost defences quickly. Too much micro for my tastes... I got quite frustrated with it to be honest!

love the last mission, so good, love the fact you can choose to have nydus or air attacks.. i went for nydus and just littered the place with bunkers and tanks :D

Bunch of Banshees and sci vessels for the nydus', sorted :)

Hmm is that true? I just did "Engine of Destruction" and destroyed the Loki on Hard, and didn't get the achievement (which says to destroy the Loki on Normal).

Sure battle.net was live? Has happened before to me and it turned out that battle.net had died while I was ingame.

How are you finding the game?

I've had to let some achievements slide. It's my first play through and I was getting bogged down (I wasn't moving on until I got all achievements)
Gave up doing that on mission 7 or so as it was taking me forever :D

That’s happened to me before as well. Not convinced myself.....I've played through missions on both settings to get the relevant achievements

That if you can tech up to voids (the airships with the blue rays) then sneak some round the back you're sorted.

Just gotta hold off the inevitable swarm that will come your way with stalkers and whatnot

Except if he builds hydralisks hydras > n* voidrays :)

It will catch some players out though. My favourite (high risk) strat on something like desert oasis, is to get a fast couple of stalkers and go and harass the zerg, who almost always fast expands. Once you have three stalkers out, pop down a forge, and stargate. Chrono 2 void rays (and get a third to join in) and rally to their main hatch. They will usually be going lair tech at this point. First job is to drop his queen, then if he has a hydra den, level that. Then you win :)

The fast stalkers confuse him a bit (since he can't get vision of your base) and let you snipe a couple overlords. You also give him the impression you're going for a gateway mix and his natural reaction will be to push out some zerglings and hopefully delay getting hydras a little bit while he macros up.

Your forge lets you build some cannons at your choke, because what will happen is those zerglings will get hungry and want to eat your probes. A couple of stalkers and a few cannons at your choke will dissuade this counterpush.

The void rays in his main should end the game if he has fewer than 5 hydras (quite possible if he's heavily macroing).

Sometimes the achievements are a bit wack if bnet is flaking out :(
