Indie, in ZvZ I struggle sooo bad. I normally open banelings. If that doesnt win it I generally have taken out a chunk of there workers. A game I just played he just massed roach's and in the end he did a 50 roach push basically. I knew he had mass roach's so I made roach/hydra. Are hydra's worth getting v mass roach? Or is it a case of just out macro them?
ZvZ these days doesn't really bode well for a baneling opening unless you really do some damage with them early on.
from what i've noticed it really isnt worth much to go hdyra unless your economy is booming or if they have gone for mutas. Roaches are just more mobile. Its better to spend your money on burrow tech or 2-3 Infestors. they can really change the tide of the battle.
Also, another reason to go hydra would be on maps where you intend on attacking or defending choke points. because the hydras sit behind your roaches, they can really throw out some damage without any return.
Roaches seem to be quite favoured as an opening though, mainly i guess due to the range buff etc, +1 speedlings against roach is no longer a valid counter to it either it seems, mutas counter it pretty well, but to go mutas you have to make it obviouse by getting spine crawlers at your main or ramp.
ZvZ appears to have taken a turn for the worst with the roach buff. Unless you pull off some sort of odd strategy like a one-base-muta without them scouting. then you really do run the risk of it just turning into RoachvRoach macro wars. Its sad that theres not even a lot of micro that can be done. At least Vanilla ZvZ saw some lovely muta micro
I think its really important in ZvZ to hide your tech buildings and your units as much as you can to keep your opponent guessing, just as important as it is to always keep an eye on his base, sacrifice overlords if you need too.
