OMG I stink at this game :o Never played the first SC and have just played Supreme Commander/FA to death the past few years.

Can anybody give me some basic pointers? With Terran I get slaughtered by the AI on easy. I pump out a few units as fast I can, but the first enemy attack kills them easily and then it's game over within 5 mins :(

I seem to have had most success with Zerg - I actually manage to inflict some damage with them. Terran just seem so weak and I get absolutely destroyed in no time. What am I doing wrong?

I don't even know where to start with Protos - LOL :o

I think your best bet is to start with the campaign, it's pretty much all laid out for you then if you play as Terran.

Ok, I've tried all the challenges for each race on basic, and golded each one. I actually fell in love with zerg.

I'm also aware that zerg is damn hard to play allegedly. What's a good way to learn the basics of macro and micro etc for zerg?

Yeah welcome to the swarm.

I don't think any race is harder/easier, or better/worse than any of the others. I think the game is damn fair.

It's a good idea to get some sort of plan for the first few minutes (build order etc), their are loads online to copy and learn if you want to get some good starts theuen has loads on their site.

Other than than,

1. Exansions - get an expansion early, and by 15 mins in you should have 5 bases if your expanding at a good pace.

2. Queens - spawn larva is a must.

3. Spread creep, everywhere!

4. Scout properly, spread those overlords out, and keep something outside their base early on, when they leave it to attack, you've got loads of time to hatch all those eggs in time.

Everything else is up to you really, it all depends on your strategies and maybe even favorite units play an influence too. But macro macro macro.

i like this game a lot (when i dont get rushed) i just cant figure out how to build units so fast.
Ive followed online build orders but i still dont seem to be as quick as some other people,
I only use terran and by the time i have a barracks up, i have Zerglings attacking me and wipe me out, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG????????????

Your not doing anything wrong, your just being a victim of cheese tactics, it's really spoiling the game for new (and experienced) players.

If I see one more cannon rush!!!

Alex74 - thanks for the most epic reply I've ever received in my 16 years on the intrawebs :D

Seriously, that was a great help and I'm itching to get home from work so I can try some of it out. Thanks :)

You too, Scott.

Alright could I possibly get some zerg..tutoring of sorts? I've got the build order down against AI in skirmish, but it all gets messy quick; i get harassed, lose track of the queens etc, and start pumping out a lot less, expansion is limited to 2-3 bases and it all goes wrong.

ARGGGHHHH - why do people in 2 v 2 insist on expanding immediately as Zerg and then without even building a single attacking/defending unit (aside from a queen) then expand to a 3rd base and leave me to hold off the 2 opposition terran/protoss players!!!

The guy then has the cheek to call me a "noob" since I couldn't defend his 3 bases and my own, with ZERO help from him (he had 47 drones and 3 queens or something like that) - not a single attacking/defending unit at the end of the game!

Sounds like a poor attempt a pretty good build order.

I agree with the fast expansion and the 3 queens, but it needs to be done right. When it's practiced and done properly with good scouting it's actually pretty damn good.

But yeah, a third base and leaving a team mate alone to defend, bad zerg!

I have a problem in 2v2 where the team colours seem predefined and pretty annoying... I am always yellow and my team mate always green, which is fine, but my enemies are always both the same shade of red :( So I can't tell on the minimap who's units are who's, and if they're the same race, I can't tell anywhere

The button to change it back to normal colours is just to the right of the minimap :)

Ok Smite first thing which is super important:
Scout!!
Watch what your enemy is doing so that you know how much defense you need... As zerg, you are effectively costing yourself money every second a defensive unit spends unneeded as that unit could instead be a drone, so really, you want enough defense to be able to defend yourself comfortably, but no more - the rest should be drones.

Once you have a few zerglings, try leaving some near the enemy base so that you know when you will be attacked - then if you find that the attacking army is better than yours, you can quickly bulk your army up before they arrive. Also, leave zerglings at key locations.

Remember - focus on economy as much as possible, and make sure you keep up with those lava injects - otherwise you won't be able to spend your money.

Also, don't waste banelings! They cost 50 minerals and 25 gas (inc the zergling) which is not cheap when you build 20 of them... For the same price, you could nearly get a roach. The attack which took out your expansion could easily have been dealt with without using banelings at all. You lost 24 banelings in that attack - 1200 minerals and 600 gas. Totally not worth it.

When moving on to lair tech, get it in your main, as that is the least likely to die.

Get more roaches, less banelings, and keep spending your money... 5000 minerals in the bank is a lot - equivalent of 200 zerglings!

Edit: Oh and set your army as a group then when you are attacked, just tell them to defend... Your response to being attacked was very slow and your army was easily big enough to take them out. When the armies are most similar size, get your army into a reasonable position as quickly as possible and then attack the enemy army.

So I followed Alex and Scott's advice and thrashed the AI 3 games running :D

I think the problem is that my style of play in SupCom is "slow and deliberate" - and it SC2 it seems like you have to frantically churn out units and be rapidly multitasking all the time. My SupCom style just doesn't translate over - but I've been playing it so long it's hard to change :)

I feel like I'm getting somewhere now though \0/

Aye..

ex-supcom player here.

Sup Com is a much different game.

TY joe btw..I love banelings though. Explosions 'n all that, you know :P

I'll change my tactics, i just panicked and thought..hm..banelings will get rid of this crap right away.
