When are we going to see some truly original inspiring games coming out on the big consoles?,, all they seem to be are rehashes of the same genre over and over. My hopes rest with the Wii.

When somebody goes out and takes the risk.

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
this is my arguement in the anti-sony thread, almost evry game on the ps2 is a sequel

Purely cost.
Original games are made and they don't always sell well, which costs a company many millions, thus sequels or games from a popular genre are made.

Then that just shows how blinkerd we are, if we dont try anything new

As a whole, the public are, yes. Games companies know this, thats why I said in a serious/joke 3 years ago that the launch titles for PS3 would be Grand Turismo 5, Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4, and wouldn't you know it, they were the first 3 officially announced titles.

Games like Katamari Damacy were popular, but not mainstream, same for Vib Ribbon or Rez. Each original and rated quite highly, none sold to mainstream levels, as a result it would be costly to take a gamble on making another original game for those companies.

The last 'original' game I remember doing well was PaRappa the Rappa and despite selling well it wasn't very good.

Depends on your definition of original, do you mean a new genre? I think as games technology advances we will just merge most genres into one...

Or do you mean new stories like GOW?

Funny thing is, people say we need more originality in games, and im all for that. But then they seem to think a new story isnt good enough, that its "another" FPS. I cant agree with that as in my mind thats like saying we shouldnt have more books.. its the same paper based entertainment with a different story..

I don't really understand what you mean gord?

I'm a big fan of books, I've read some great stories, I've read some truly awful ones. I've even read ones that resemble a copy of another story, or ones that are infact 'just another thriller' or 'just another action story'.

Whether thats what you meant or didn't mean wasn't too clear, I'm sorry.

I was saying that some people expect for each game to reinvent gaming for them. In the world of literature this is never expected, the majority of books are repetitive of a situation/story, but ive never heard anyone complain about that [although i do not frequent book forums], so was just wondering why it happens in gaming entertainment.

I would guess it's much in the same way it does in movie entertainment, it's readily available entertainmen by many to take too long or require too much effort (which is ridiculous really). But I do agree, more often than not I get games purely to entertain me, whether or not it redifines a genre doesn't come into account.

Well its the same with everything. All these industries are about making money, and if something Sells, why change it?
Look at movies, all the 'summer blockbusters' are sequals. xmen 3, Superman Returns, Pirates of the caribbean 2 and mission impossible 3 (well it was ment to be :p)
I also see what Gord is saying. Whenever anyone comes out with a new shooter for example people do just say 'oh its all been done before', 'Just another shooter' so why not just make a Half Life 3 then? If there is a story that works
Maybe i look at things wrong but in an FPS there is not really a whole lot that can be done, point shoot continue.....

People thought that back in the days of Quake and Doom, then Half-Life and Deus-Ex, and possibly FarCry to a degree, all proved that you can certainly have a story in a first person shooter.

You are right but it's a huge risk, these days games cost a fortune to develop. If they get it wrong it could finish off a dev studio.

Its a lot safer for a developer to stick with a sequel or a film licence or just simply copy a successful game from another dev.

I'm not sure what's the worse comment. The mind-boggling obviousness of "OMG why do I only ever hear about sequels coming out?" (clue: sequels are far easier to hype), or:

You champion originality and then insult the company that brought you Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, Katamari Damacy, Guitar Hero, and Metal Gear Acid, to name a but a few?

Seems Nintendo are the only ones with the balls to try new things.

Well, if the fans are anything to go by, Nintendo are sitting on a lot of cash to back them up, not that Microsoft arnt, but they are looking to make their games section profitable, which the least risk is from tried and tested solutions.
