Orthos and SmallFFT questions

I have a very basic question here, so:

Im running my E4300 at 230x9, about 2 ghz. I ask you abot stability testing, it seems really pointless to run 12 hours of orthos everytime I raise the FSB? I think I should use SmallFFT to about 2.8Ghz and then start using the 12 hour orthos? Or should I max the OC first and do 12 hours last to make sure final stability?

For how long should I run SmallFFT to get a view on is it safe? Im sorry f my english it ain´t perfect but hope you understand and can help me :)

in my personal experince for using orthos on testing if it goona fail it normally does within the first 10 mins but 9/10 within the first 2 mins.

on all my overclock testing when it has past at least the first hour mine i have never stopped and lasted the 8-12 hours no worries. everyones may be different but all i can say that on the 20 + times i have used orthos on both my machines this is how its worked for me
 
Also, are my temps ok? The abovementioned OC with stock volts I am 66 degrees under load (orthos). This seems way too high for a 15% overclock! I use the stock HSF but i still think the temps should be lower.. Any help is appreciated. I just ordered the Noctua NH-U12F, and i seriously hope it will drop my load temps with atleast 10 degrees celsius

Oh one more thing. My CPU seems to underclock itself when not under load!
When running orthos CPUZ gives correct readings (235x9) but when i stop Orthos it reverts to somthing like 235x6! What is the cause of this?

Now when I raised FSB to 240 the computer restarted itself like 5 times after i saved and quit bios and reset the OC so its stock again? :confused:
Im really confused right now.. TAT and coretemp says my CPU is at 54 idle and Bios says its 32..

Yep that's what I tend to do when 'finding my feet' with a new cpu (well... prior to my latest acquisition it was prime95, not orthos, but the same applies).

Obviously only 10-15mins isn't going to say whether you have a stable overclock or not, but that's not the point - it's just to get a ballpark estimate of whether you have definitely pushed things too far or not. Eventually you will reach a stage where it conks out after a couple of mins, at which time you either tweak some settings (voltages etc) or ease back a bit.

Once you think you have hit a ceiling then it's time to clock it down a tad and start running some proper tests for a few hours.

The idea behind this philosophy is that basically if you spend 12hrs testing every OC you did, it would take weeks to find the limit for your chip. I know I cba with that.

Could be you need more voltage (vcore/nb). However having recently got a C2D chip I've also discovered that there seems to be 'FSB holes' - settings which just plain don't work for no apparent reason. You may find that choosing a higher FSB (say 250) works flawlessly. 240 should easily be within reach of a E4300 and it wouldn't surprise me if this is what is stopping you.
 
Yeah I got it to work by cranking it all up to 300 FSB.. Works like a dream now! Amazing that it didnt boot properly with 240 :eek: Well it´s stable at 2,7 Ghz now at stock volts, Im gonna push it to 3Ghz today. Thanks so much HangTime :)
