ORthos Errors

OK. Thanks for the help everyone, i'm at a loss with this sort of thing :)

I've stopped memtest after 2.5 hours. in any case it appears to just be repeating the tests over and over. It had 0 fails and that was at Auto Volts and 5-5-5-18 timings.

Ive rebooted, changed to 4-4-4-12 @2.2v and rebooted again, and memtest has pulled up 356 errors in under a minute, so i assume its going to fail everything.

Should i RMA this?

I'd contact Crucial support, and see if they think it should be RMA'd or if they have some settings to improve things.

They're not exactly a small manufacturer, so they'll know more about the memory and compatibility with different boards and chipsets than anyone else will.

Probably best to contact them by email than by phone.

It may be that it's bad compatibility between the board/chipset and the memory rather than either being at fault.

Edit : As for the PSU. You aren't really stressing it that much. Compared to the newer graphics cards the 7 series use hardly any power. (Yes the new ones use THAT much), and the CPU doesn't use a massive amount more than what's been used in the past 3 or 4 years.

So it's quite possible you're only using 50% of the PSUs maximum power which it can easily supply. You may want to see if you can get Speedfan, or something similar to work with your motherboard to see if the voltages are within 5% of what they should be. And at some point you should put yourself down for a PSU upgrade. But I don't see any reason to rush out and buy one. I see a lot of people rushing out to buy a PSU to fix miscelaneous problems, and it's not always the PSU at fault.

Also, I did a quick search on google, and I've seen compatibility problems with your board and with Ballistix.... that again would seem to indicate that neither are at fault, but together they don't work well.

You may want to contact Asus support and Crucial and seek advice from them.

I'd just email them both and not mention you are contacting the other.

I would return it to Crucial as it's failing MemTest at its rated settings.

Their returns service is very fast as you send it to Scotland.

At worst they'll test it and return it as fully working and you can then put it down to the aforementioned motherboard compatibility problem.

Or if they test it and find it to be faulty you'll get it replaced.

Either way they'll send you back working memory.

emailed both :) thanks for the advice! and for researching for me :P much appreciated.

Hah. I typed your board name and ballistix into google.

Anyone want to hire me as a full time researcher? Looking for 6 weeks paid holiday, Bupa, 15% salary pension, RPI +3% linked salary, starting at 40K.

Yeah, i've emailed them tonight and Asus too, but if i RMA i wont do it till Thursday or so cause im going out of the country for a bit on the friday. That way they have time to respond and if i do RMA, i wont miss it cause i wont be here. I'll just run it till thursday on 5-5-5-18, which works perfectly stable, just holds the system back a bit :)

and Halk, it might be all you did to use Google, but you didnt even have to do that :P

Thanks everyone for the input, i'll return with anything i find (im sure there will a nother thread for my busted Mobo and CPU soon too :P)

OK guys, i've been thinking i might sell the board and get another. Maybe the P5N? What board would work well with the Ballistix and a E6300? I'm not really bothered about SLI anymore cause i'll prolly upgrade to an 8800 soon

a new mobo, and not bothered about sli - my recommendation would be any P35 implementation.
There are a few threads in these forums already, worth taking a look at. They give good o/c, low temps, and future-proof for penryn, fwiw.

By all accounts it's a decent board. I'd hold off for a week and see what the support(s) say. It could well be that adjusting some unheard of memory field could fix it - then again it could be that it's just chalk and cheese.

I'd wait a week and see though.

Got an email back from Asus, they reccomend updating the Bios (and on the latest bios it does list "increased memory compatability" as a point.)

Dont have a floppy drive, and when i plug it in, the PC doesnt POST, so tbh, sod it. I'll just run the stuff at 5-5-5-18. cba with all this :P
