just for clarification:

i can have windows 7 installed multiple times on the "same" pc?

BUT:

i cannot install that same copy of windows 7 onto a new pc, as it is currently registered to the other pc?

so it just won't install, or it won't let me register it?

As long as its a retail copy of windows, you can install it as many times as you like on as many pc's as you like, but you can only have it "activated" on one pc at any one time.

mine's oem :(

i take it this is 'tied' to my current mobo.

i was hoping i could 'de-activate' it on my current pc, then when i install that windows 7 disc on the new pc, 're-activate' it there?

Just re-install it and when it comes to activation, follow the steps and ring Microsoft on the number provided if needs be, your previously motherboard failed and has been replaced :)

It's painless and something I've done before.

a friend told me he had a oem copy of vista and he installed it on three different pc's (completely different mobo's).
that seems to contradict everything :(

unless you CAN do it, but you're not SUPPOSED to do it, as it is breaking the EULA.

I've had OEM Windows 7 follow me around for about 10 years to various different machines and now VMs
just call them up and some special automation thing works out if you're a scheming liar or not

so the automated phone thingy should work?

i've had to do that once before, the second tome i installed windows 7 on a different hd on the same current pc.
