Hey, Well my dads looking for a phone that will let him use gps and os maps to go on walks. Trying to get it as cheap as possible to be honest. Not too sure what to be looking at as to software and os for the phones and then which phones so any light would help loads thanks all

checkout Viewranger.com guys

Its available for Nokia, Android and iOS.

Personally I'd get a cheap iPod touch (Hmm I thought the newer ones have gps? maybe I'm wrong) as the maps are expensive.

Don't think the iPod touch has GPS...

The site sells a Nokia 5800 preloaded with all the GB maps for just shy of £300; is that within your price range?

GPS for the iPod touch? I just checked it out and Apples marketing is a bit misleading... 'location based maps' is not gps only wifi triangulation, doh sorry :( maybe there's a 3rd party gps adaptor for it?

I've just downloaded the trial on android, it's a great piece of software and would totally recommend it. The Desire just eats it up (I remember when loading a couple of 25k tiles into gis was a chore)

See if you can get a free dell streak, that'll make your dad feel like james bond trecking around the countryside :) A 4" android would also own the software (galaxy s)

Regarding the nokia, would he really need all the UK 50k tiles? Google maps + local 25k tiles might be better? Its a very old slow phone too (but maybe a stylus type touch screen is better for bad weather?)

Fair point, been looking at dell streak, galaxy and the desire. Didnt think about the bad weather tho, I wonder which will be the most water proof?
