OS problem

My girlfriends computer had an old OS on it, so a friend of the family said he would install XP onto it but he installed an un-authorised copy (or something like that) and I would like to sort it out for her. how would I sort this out without loosing all of her files and data? I will need to buy an authorised copy of the XP CD but if I install it, wouldn't it loose all her data.

IMO you'd be better backing up the data to CD / DVD and starting a fresh.
