I'd like to use one of my old 120gb HDDs to keep a backup of my MacBook, just incase it dies. I assume i'd be best of using an external USB2/FireWire case, but what about software? I just want a complete copy of the drive, rather than specific files and folders.

Any ideas at all? I'm a bit lost when it comes to Mac software! :(

Carbon Copy Cloner sounds like it fits the bill if you're looking for a freebie that will do the job, it's also possible to create an image of an existing disk from Disk Utility

I had posted superduper "for the win" - a curse on the elite speak editor.

I have nothing but praise for superduper - and you can use it for free, you miss out on the incremental backups though.

Just note this warning in case youre running PPC and Intel...

"CCC 2.3 is not yet available as a Universal binary, however it does run via Rosetta on the new Intel Macs. A word of caution: Apple currently does not support booting an Intel Mac from an OS installation that came from a PowerPC Mac, and vice versa. Until Apple provides a Universal OS that is capable of booting booth architectures, do not clone a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac or vice versa. User files, of course, can be copied between the two machines. If you get a new Intel Macintosh, consider using the Migration Assistant to transfer your data to the new machine."

I'd use the built in disk utility personally

If i make an image with this and save it on another computer on the network, and there was a failure on the Mac, how would i go about restoring that image to a new drive?
