Hi all,

I've seen this in a few screenshots and was just wondering how you do it? Instead of just having the "Macintosh HD" icon, how do you get the same shortcut that appears at the top of finder to appear on your desktop.

Download whatever icon you fancy.

Right click whatever you want to change and click Get Info.

Then drag the icon file in place of the current one in the top left of the Get Info box :)

I don't think you can put that particular icon anywhere else, I tried dragging it off the top of a finder window and it would not let me place it anywhere else other than the side bar. There may be some terminal magic that can do this but I have no idea what that would be.

I think you are mistaken, OP.

Most people on here have changed the default icon of the HDD, to that which resembles their machine e.g. they have a MBP icon for the HDD.

Pressing Cmd + J will let you choose which elements are visible when connected on the desktop (HDD is on by default).

Fair enough... Can't really argue with that :)

Is there a way to get at the icons used by the system (the windows equivelent would be pointing at shell32 to see all the system icons?) So I can use the apple-supplied laptop icon?

thanks for pointing me in the right direction though, i thought i was going mad as i figured it had to be simple :)

There is no central location for the icons, as per Windows but instead if you press Apple/Cmd + I to bring up the Get Info pane, you can click the icon on the top left and copy it.

Open a Get Info pane on the icon you wish to change and simply paste in the new icon (remember to click the icon first).

There is a how-to in the Mac sticky if you need a visual diagram.
