I have OSX Tiger already on my powerbook G4 is it worth getting the new OS X Leopard when it comes out?

I like to keep things up to date if I can , but already my G4 has been out of date for some time and I have no plan on getting it updated , id probably get a MacBook if I was to get a new laptop


A Mac osx tiger question also

In my doc I have loads of icons is there anyway I can section them off to put in a category e.g. Games, media etc? I’ve not really explored my Mac as I just use it for web browsing and spreadsheets , database etc.

I would wait till next year when the Santa Rosa platform is out, and get a new macbook whatever and Leopard with it.
 
Is Leopard going to be a free upgrade from Tiger (OSX 10.4.7), like XP Sp1 -> Sp2 or is it going to be a XP -> Vista style upgrade, costing an arm and a leg?

Will be "like" XP -> Vista without the BIG price tag.

Should be the typical £60ish since Cheetah (AFAIK).
 
Thanks for that info,

Is it looking like its much of an improvement anyway? From what i can see the main things seem to be better 64bit handling and Spaces (a slight improvement on Expose) am I missing a killer feature?

well, it's a less substancial upgrade really as the underlying OS is pretty good, so the XP to Vista comparison isn't quite right, the new features are nice but nothing is a huge stand out one.
 
Stevie J hasn't clued us in on all of the new features, yet. But, even with just what's been announced, I'd say it'll be just as worthwhile an upgrade as every itteration of OS X has been.
 
Dont EVER buy the first release of a new OS, you silly people! What for all the bugs to be fixed before making the change! You have been warned!

Eh, OS X 10.0 was a steaming pile of crap, barely an improvement on NeXTstep. It was so bad that they gave 10.1 to 10.0 customers for free. However, OS X is rather mature now. I really doubt they'd break anything unintentionally with the 5th release of this OS.

You guys just made me puke a little into my mouth! Im still having nightmares about the first release of Tiger. But hell, go for it fanboys! Dont let me stop you! ;)

I dont agree with this.

I've done 10.0 --> 10.1 --> 10.2 --> 10.3 --> 10.4 and I've never had a problem.

Apple are actually quite good at testing there software, infact I've never had a problem with any apple apps :eek:

As for me, I will be buying 10.5, using education discount! £49 :D

Performance enhancements mainly for Intel *spit* users, new features etc.

Wow! £49? That's errm... 2/3 cheaper than Vista? :rolleyes:

Definitely gonna buy on day of release. Time Machine... That's something XP or even vista will not have in the basic OS :D

Unlike Vista im 100% confident that Apple will release a working product, thats why I don't mind paying £50 every year for a good product.

Paying £150 for a flakey product (which you know will happen from MS) Im not *that* willing to do.

There are pirate copies of OS X around, but I don't want them, they have no protection, easy to install, so why do I buy it with no hesitation? But the protected Vista I want to download, why? I dont know, maybe the price tag? Or maybe I want to test it first? :confused:

Either way buy on release, the price doesn't change more than £10 anyway... infact I dont think it changes at all.

10.5 is going to be released just after Vista IIRC.

However MS will NOT, in all liklihood, charge you for Vista SP1. Apple charges its £65 for updates that are of a similar scope.

...Not that I find any fault in that. I'm just pointing out the dichotomy.

Service packs in my mind = 10.x.2 or .3 or .4 and microsofts usual security fixing apple has aswell, weekly or bi-weekly IIRC.

Even if its is small updates and additions, Im still not bothered paying for it :p

Over 4 years i've spent £150, which actually is roughly Vista will cost for its cheapest versions. I've still got 2 more years of OS X buying to get to the full version :eek:
 
i bought Tiger the day it came out I had panther on my laptop, i shall be getting Tiger for future upgrades into 64bit , the Time Machine is a great asset to the Mac , though I think that is the only benefit I can see that will be helpful
 
Leopard, oh yes

As for the upgrade i would have to say yes, some features are making it more like Linux (good or bad) spaces anyone !!

as for splitting up your apps, create a folder say in your Apps folder and create aliases to your apps and drop them in it, drag this to the doc and voila, right click the folder which shows aliases to your apps :D
